The app has always been available for a month’s free trial, after which it cost £2.99 to buy to be able to continue using it.

The company said that it planned to make money by selling premium content, such as new themes and emojis to users.

It said that users who had already paid to use the full SwiftKey service would be rewarded with a Premier Pack of 10 themes, free of charge.

The app is also adding new customisable keyboard themes, support for 800 emoji characters, a new prediction feature which learns which emojis you use in particular situations, the option of adding a line of numbers above the letter keys, and improvements to the word prediction engine, autocorrect and gesture typing.

SwiftKey is also working on an app for iOS 8 devices.

The Swiftkey app has been critically well received since it launched in 2010 and has become one of the best-selling Android applications in the world.
