Google adds Mapplets for personalising Google Maps
Google has officially released a new feature add-on for Google Maps that will allow users to personalise maps by layering additional information on top of the basic maps.
Mapplets can be used for layering hotel, fuel, and weather information on a holiday map, or creating routes and trails for driving, walking, or jogging.
Personalised maps can be saved, have notes added to them, and then shared with other people.
Developers can create these Mapplets, meaning the service should expand to provide a whole range of useful applications. There are already over 100 Mapplets available, albeit with a strong US focus, though the general service will work for UK users and on UK and several European maps, as well as Canada, Australia, and Russia.
The new tools can be added by clicking “Add Content” in the “My Maps” tab in Google Maps.
