Taiwan greenies set for doorless solar car
Hybrid? Schmybrid! The future for eco-friendly motoring is solar power. Well, for those of us who don’t live in [insert name of comically-rainy local city, as appropriate] anyway. But what will future solar cars look like? This is the aim of the World Solar Challenge competition.
Pick of this year’s entries was a car designed by researchers at the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences in Taiwan. It weighs 250kg, has a top speed of 70mph, and built-in lithium-polymer batteries that can store the sun’s bountiful rays for up to three hours.
It’s also robust, being made from Nomex honeycomb, which is apparently known for its good impact and fire resistance, and has been used for aircraft and spaceship parts. The car may even go on sale this year for around $25,000 (around £12,730). Hurrah! Now, if only they can add some doors…
