How to economise your car – Doug Heffron's super-efficient 1989 Geo Metro
Anyone fretting about the pumps drying up again, should the Shell tanker drivers strike once more, might want to think about Doug Heffron’s alternative coping method rather than panic buying.
Back in 1993 when fuel prices sky-rocketed in the US, Doug home converted his Geo Metro Xfi, which already did a very reasonable 56 miles per gallon, into a rather unsightly but undeniably stripped-down and highly economical 75mpg mutant machine.
By basically chopping off the right hand side of his car, Doug increased fuel efficiency by 34% while still maintaining a vehicle that worked perfectly well all year round. With fuel prices on the up again this eco-mobile has come out of mothballs once more and is doubtless turning heads and wrinkling brows all over New England.
I wouldn’t mess with your Ferrari but if you’ve got an old banger lying around and an angle grinder, it might be worth a crack. They will mock but who’ll be having the last laugh as you cruise by the queues at the pump?
