iPhone 3G Vs. HTC Touch Diamond – the ultimate specs comparison
Both handsets tout their touchscreens as being their biggest asset, however how do they compare in a fight? Call it a touch-off, if you will. On your marks…get set…go!
Dimensions
HTC Touch Diamond: 102mm in height, is 51mm wide and 11.5mm thick, weighs 110g.
iPhone 3G: 115.5mm high, 62.1mm wide and 12.3mm thick, weighs 133g.
Display
HTC Touch Diamond: 2.8″ touch-sensitive screen.
iPhone 3G: 3.5″ multi-touch display.
Operating System
HTC Touch Diamond: Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the first HTC phone to do so. However similar it may be to WM 6.0, HTC has actually layered their own software on over the phone, giving it a more user-friendly navigational system, and TouchFLO 3D technology, which we first saw in the Touch last year.
iPhone 3G: The iPhone runs on OS X, which is Apple’s very own operating system.
Storage Capacity
HTC Touch Diamond: 4GB of internal flash storage, plus a microSD card slot is supported, for additional storage.
iPhone 3G: 8GB and 16GB, with the latter available in both black and white.
Camera
HTC Touch Diamond: 3.2-megapixel sensor, and auto focus. The internal accelerometer means the Diamond acts like the iPhone, so photos can be viewed in landscape-stylee and be browsed through with a flick of the finger. The Diamond also has a second camera on the front, a VGA CMOS colour camera, for video-calling.
iPhone 3G: 2.0-megapixel camera, with geo-tagging and third-party application integration.
Media Player
HTC Touch Diamond: An integrated speaker and FM radio feature in the Diamond, and the audio player can play MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, WAV, and AMR-NB formats.
iPhone 3G: The iPhone’s main thrill is indeed the iPod functionality, and with 8GB or 16GB options, that’s a lot of AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 1, 2, and 3), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV.
Video formats supported are H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
Connectivity
HTC Touch Diamond: 3G HSDPA connectivity, plus integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
iPhone 3G: 3G HSDPA, plus integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
GPS
HTC Touch Diamond: GPS and A-GPS ready.
iPhone 3G: Assisted GPS.
Battery Life
HTC Touch Diamond: 270 minutes’ talktime for WCDMA and up to 330 minutes on GSM networks, whereas standby is 396 hours and 285 hours respectively. When video-calling, users will get up to 145 minutes on WCDMA.
iPhone 3G: Up to five hours of talk time using 3G, or 10 hours using 2G, standby is 300 hours, five hours of 3G internet use and six hours of Wi-Fi internet use, seven hours of video playback and up to 24 hours of audio playback.
Availability and Pricing
HTC Touch Diamond: Out now, available for free on various contracts with T-Mobile, otherwise for £500 PAYG.
iPhone 3G: Out on July 11th, you can get it for free on £45 and £75 per month tariffs, or £99 on the £30 and £35 per month plans. With O2, of course.

Just a quick note. iphone does not support Adobe Flash Player, and HTC does. So if you have any favorite video feeds which require Adobe Flash Player, go with HTC. It really sucks when you want to watch something but can’t, because Apple can’t get over themselves to support such a popular video format. Suck it up, and get over your burocratic bs Apple!

i have a htc touch diamond and it dose have a microsd slot wich on the box says up to 16g i also had the touch pro with the keybored the only diffrance between them is the keybored that i have noticed both very great phones would recomend to any one im not an apple person lol
I have the Htc Fuze from ATT I have sent the phone back six times it was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent buy an iphone if you want something that can do everything
This information on the Diamond is only for one particular version, for almost ever different carrier there is a different touch diamond, for example my diamond DOESN’T have a expansionslot, or a front camera, and my carrier corrupted the gps files so you need to pay for it (if you live in canada: TELUS SUCKS!!) so if you are in the market for a touch diamond, try to find a carrier that has the touch diamond with ALL of the features
HTC IS THE BEST
you all suck shite
HTC TOUCH DIAMOND SUPERB,IN EVERY WAY ONLY BATTERY LIFE SUCKS AND COMPULSORY LIKE ALL NEW PDA’S READ UR MANUAL,READ,READ…
I need some serious GPS software free,or is google earth OK???
I own, Htc Diamond,
for my opinion, Diamond is a great device for proffessionals,
But if you like, just gui, go for iPhone,
Me I like working, so I went for htc diamond and it does alot for me. -:)
HTC Diamond is superb!!!
I shall deal with criticisms.
Windows Mobile:
Yes, quite! Always has and always will be a problem!
What HTC have done is incredible in my opinion.
Entirely controllable by finger (except some initial setting up). Also, so much easier to use. I am a power user never having owned any sort of PDA before and never touched the manuel.
Initially it can be very clunky but after a while, things end up in the cache which means that it is faster. Eventually, too many things go into the cache and a soft reset is in order, but this is hardly a problem.
All clunkiness can be removed by a bit of tweaking with a program called DiamondTweak.
This used to be French only but last month we gained an english version. 🙂
This allows many tweaks and helpfully marks the DiamondTweak recommended and the HTC default settings (which are almost always different!). Since adjusting things such as graphic fluidity, allowing memory indexing and all sorts of things that HTC never set for some reason, I completely “de-clunked” my diamond.
DiamondTweak is the only piece of tweak software you should need and you should only have one tweak kit anyway otherwise you have conflicts!
It is FREEEEEEE, safe and legal. No warranties are broken and you have no chance of bricking your device with it. Any idiot can figure out what tweaks they should have
The problem appears to be that HTC were obsessed with maximum available memory at the expense of speed. I have lost just under 10MB through these tweaks. Out of 4GB, that is hardly a lot!
This doesn’t only solve performance. You can also unlock all sorts of modes that HTC removed because they slowed things down when used.
Examples are: 3G on when available instead of the HTC preset always on. This adds about 2 hours of battery and requires an extra 5 seconds to reconnect when using data.
Also, the camera has a sport mode and a GPS tagged photo mode.
Lastly, for those that like their music over 100db, you can remove the EU imposed 100db limit in DiamondTweak!
HTC removed these because they took a little time to load and gave a bad impression!
They seemed to only pander to the reviewers keen to make a good impression all round!
Overall though, once I tweaked it, TouchFLO 3D, with WM6 was faster and smoother than iPhone! (I sat in the O2 shop to compare the two, mine and their demo iPhone).
Micro-SD, lack thereof:
Yes, stupid but no-one is perfect. However, who said the iPhone had a slot! The 4GB is actually in the form of SD memory (so far as windows sees it) but it is completely built in. 4GB isn’t bad. You can get a fair amount of music on that and youtube is very fast, what with the full speed HSDPA!
Also, it isn’t to hard to connect to USB as, believe it or not, that custom USB/Audio port will actually fit a standard mini-USB cable (something I found out by mistake).
Smaller Screen:
Unlike the iPhone, the diamond actually fits in your pocket. Also, the screen resolution on the diamond is significantly HIGHER than that of the iPhone. In any case, the full qwerty is fully usable with fingers at the current width which means, in my opinion, it is more than adequate.
The touch sensativity is far better in the diamond than the iPhone and it responds far better to styluss and fingers alike.
Lastly, the screen is responsive, not solid, which makes faster writing/typing.
Battery life:
I’m not going to hide. It is bad but it is for every small PDA (HTC Diamond, Nokia 6120, Nokia 6220, iPhone, etc.). It is better than the iPhone and, unlike iPhone, you can achieve a day by changing settings such as 3G from permanent to as needed. The Diamond’s light sensitive back-light is great. Also, unlike iPhone, you can use a spare battery in the diamond.
3rd party aps:
Many of iPhone’s aps are adaptations of WM ones (the beer glass one is a great example!), whilst many of the rest are simply links to web-pages adapted for iSafari.
To say there are less is complete bollucks!
Also, many people complain that iPhone regularly crashes on 3rd party aps. This is not a complaint with diamond, provided that you have Windoes .NET framework 3.5 installed. In addition, aps have access to all phone features, if you allow it (bluetooth, GPS, camera, etc.), something which isn’t the case with iPhone.
GPS:
Just to clarify, if you want free GPS, get google earth. It gives directions and provides maps or aerial photography. It only gives textual turn-by-turn directions though (none spoken). You will also need unlimited mobile data (fiver per month from 3, Vodaphone or O2) as it doesn’t let you pre-download maps.
The GPS is superb and accurate to about 4m in the average street.
Audio socket, lack thereof:
I agree, stupid not having 3.5mm on the phone. Buy an adapter for pennies on ebay.
Looks:
Can someone tell me what is ‘sexy’ about the iPhone? Just compare it to the diamond look of the diamond!
Finger gestures:
OK, so we don’t have fancy apple ones but you can flick to scroll fast and there is a ‘click-wheel’ for zooming. Also, like iPhone, it has auto-rotation. I found the auto-rotation far more stable than iPhone.
Camera:
I have NEVER seen a better phone-camera on the diamond. Unlike almost no other phones, there is a focus. YES. A REAL MOVING LENS FOCUS!!! People moan about no flash. Well, when was the last time a phone cam flash was any good? The iPhone doesn’t have flash either.
Music:
OK, fair enough. The iPhone is an iPod with a phone in. However, what with cover-flo and what have you, the diamond isn’t bad! The sound quality is very nice too.
I could sing praises but I thought I’d address criticism instead.
Overall, superb phone. Suits almost everyone.
Downsides: No memory card, battery life, no 3.5mm headphone socket.
Wow!!….seems evryone has different experiences to bring to the table, but no one seems unbiased.
I have been a staunch PPC-man since 2002/3 and was a part of the changes that has taken part in the WM world.
I have loved what WM devices can do, especially the high end ones like the HTC Advantage and now HTC Touch HD.
So many devices and it has seemed to me for years that as a PPC user, that I have been part of an elite ‘geek’ mobile device community…i.e. XDA developers (great site BTW if you’re into PPC’s it’s a must!)
Anyway cut a long story short….I finally decided to check the iPhone and iPhone 3G respectively.
iPhone (Standard) – Amazing device and does what is does better than any other mobile communication device I have ever had the pleasure of owning etc.
however…….The clunky WM devices, seems…in comparison….’out of date’ and ‘cumbersome’ to navigate…..BUT….it sure has the iPhone beat hands-down in features and productivity. Can’t test a Window Mobile device there!!
iPhone 2G or 3G (Jailbroken)…daammmnn!!! There is nothing like it on this planet to date!!….well not for the consumer anyways. These Jailbroken iPhones with latest 2.0+ Firmware become an entirely different device with unlimited potential (compared to most other’s offerings).
The jailbreaking part with its various installers and software hacks, give you back what Apple took from you once you signed up for an iPhone! The 2.0+ firmware plus the opening up of the 2.0 SDK (software development kit – free for all) gives you more choice of varying degrees of software, from Movies, Music & Games, to VNC, Remote Desktop, Microsoft ‘read’ compatibility…can’t write or create MS apps on the iPhone.
There’s too much to mention in favor of both of these devices including many, many others too.
It comes down to; intended usage of device and ease-of-use. If you need a device primarily for business but with the added capability of handling multi-media…well, WM won’t be any harder to master than your current job demands.
If you want to simply have a device that can ‘help’ you with organising your work/study/social life and keep you entertained in style and with top quality yet remain intuitive to use….then the iPhone is right up your ally.
What did I choose and why?
I made the switch to iPhone for the following reasons:
1) The iPhone completely performed way over my expections and made me question Microsofts excuse as to we were navigating through seemingly rigid yet flawed and boring interface.
2) I can get all done with the iPhone that I used my Windows Mobile device for,….but have whilst doing!
3)Got sick and tired of having to scour through threads of myriads of posts to find a solution and having to constantly flash various ROMs to my WM device as Manufacturer support is virtually non-existant in WM world, so many ROMs (equivalent to Apples Firmware upgrades)are cooked
and sooner or later we ‘Flash’ in the hope that this ROM will be faster than the last but more stable too.
** At the end of the day, the iPhone has not been branded the worlds best smartphone because of hype surrounding Apple’s ad campains etc. It has done so well because they’ve been watchin evryone else for many years whilst they were developing what must have been an ever-changing goal post as technology improves but manufacturers are NOT listeng to the needs of its customers, the end-user.
Every capable person has to work right? Only a small percentage of those emplyees will be bothered with WM devices (even though real figures would probably amount to millions of people).
However there is a much larger customer base that is more worthwhile seeking.
The average consumer with average technical ability who would want a technically advanced mobile phone/data/gps/internet device etc, BUT…..NOT to have one forced to become an expert on the device in order to be able to use it to its full capability.
Well this is dragging on for me too now, lol! ROFL.
Simply put…I’m a convert! Love the iPhone!! I now hate the clunk-click type of interface currently endured by every WM user across the world.
Good luck to anyone who thinks it’s a dificult choice to make when purchasing these things. It’s not! Look at it this way.
1) One excells in Multi-media of all sorts and can handle some aspects of business on the move.
2) The second device is the total opposite in that it excells in Office and data communications and even video conferencing, but only handles some aspects of Multi-media.
Know what you want from a device before you go rushing in and wasting your money.
The mistakes I made was looking for a device that can do-it-all…or close to it.:)
Well that was unrealistic. All you need to know is what you need from the device and how will it improve my life.
whoo wee I’m even boring myself now!! Sorry about the long post people, but I feel quite passionate about my gadgets, hence I thought I’d share my opinion……oh well you got all of it. lol 🙂
HTC Diamond pisses all over the Iphone
Iphone Bluetooth only works with other Iphones, what fuckling use is that with so many people having different types of phone????
also Apps from the Appstore crash all the time.
Theres no video record on the Iphone.
HTC BabEEE!!!
IMHO, all of the Apple production – for teenagers. Or for peoples, who cannot use their brain and hand.
The shells, like Apple’s and Touch Flo – WM have long ago. Not so stylish and shiny, but very useful. Apps, like SPB mobile shell, Pocket CM, Easy PDA, VITO quick contacts, Photo Contacts Pro, WiS Bar desktop, and many more. And now MW has many clones of iPhone shell. This is the freedom of choice. Apple give you only one way to think, WM – hundreds. But you need the brains, to tweak and build this pocket PC for yourself.
But, if you can choose from thousand of applications what you need – you’ll get possibilities, way beyond the Apple’s “think different, or better not think – buy”.
What I get, what Apple’s iPhone NEVER can give me? I simply don’t say about what my WM phone can do on the job. Synchronizing with Exchange and Shrepoint, office mobile, corporate mail and tasks, – this where iPhone suck, and will suck forever. Ok, now I exit the building, and want to get a break, drink coffee and listen music. I don’t want to get any calls. My phone lies in my pocket, on my ears – cool Jabra’s stereo headset. I simply SAY to my phone – “Flight mode on”, and then “Play album XXX”. I don’t need to open my pocket, get the iPhone, and then use my dirty fingers to scroll stupid covers. I just say to my phone – what I want. When the coffee brake is over – I just say “Stop”, “Flight mode off”, and I’m online again.
Ok, work is over, I came to my car, put phone in to cradle, and start TomTom or iGo. I can receive a calls when I driving on my headset. When I need a call to someone – I just say: “Call Sandy on mobile”.
What next? Video? Clever people use Coreplayer, which play everything. Especially, if you convert big movie into pocket format, from your PC. Music? Don’t like media player and voice control? How about interface like tricoder in StarTrack? Or iPod?
Games? Well, here WM unbeatable. Only serious consoles, like PSP can beat it. Do you like good old DOS quests, like Broken Sword or Monkey Island? How about UFO, Age of Empires, Heroes? All games from Game Boy Advanced? ZX Spectrum or Dandy?
What next? Internet? Skype, ICQ, MSN, IRC? Dont like IE? Here Opera for you, witch more advanced and better then Safari. RSS? News? SPB insite – and you automaticaly get all your news, and articles. With photos and links, but without banners. O, you get link on new book in e-library? Get it in fb2, and read with AllReader2 – iPhone suck again!
I dont understand – who need such primitive device, like iPhone?
Can HTC Dimond supported microSD card slot, for additional storage?
Can HTC Dimond supported all the future like iPhone?
like zoming, playing next song, seeing next wall paper
PhoneGuy- WM has a far more extensive catalogue of 3rd party applications, both free and commercial. I’m not saying the iPhone doesn’t have good applications, but at this point in time if you’re going to raise the issue of added features through third party software, it works more in HTC’s favour.
I’m actually fed up of no one raising the obvious consideration when drawing a comparison- what you need it for. I have a Diamond and for me, it is better than the iPhone and here’s why. I need something with an MS compatible office suite which works with Bluetooth keyboards for taking notes and doing work on the go (when I don’t want to drag around a laptop). When I do drag around a laptop, I tether to get mobile internet access so the HTC’s faster data speeds are a big plus. When I go places I want a decent GPS system; having had tomtom working flawlessly since day one (something the iPhone misses at the time of writing) again the HTC is the better phone for me. There is also the simple fact that an iPhone would be far too expensive for my student budget, thus ruling it out (for me) straight away.
By no means do I think the HTC is faultless though, and by no means do I think the iPhone is bad. If for example, you don’t need to write office docs and don’t tether but you do want something very fashionable (which probably describes the majority of consumers) and I think the iPhone would be superior. If battery life is a big concern (not for me, I’ll happily charge every night and topup with my car charger) the HTC is pathetic. If you have a huge iTunes library and a Mac and you just want the system you’ve seen in the glossy posh magazines, a Diamond would be a real spanner in the works.
Me personally though, I couldn’t live with an iPhone even if I do like it, and I suspect that if I handed my Diamond to an iPhone user they’d say the same thing.
All right, I swear I wouldn’t do this, but these comparisons have all seemed one sided. With articles leaving out functions of the iPhone and making up functions for their supposed killers. I’m going to Apple boost.
The iPhone 3G, while not perfect, remains to be the fore runner in touch based mobile OSes. Plain and simple, iPhone Mac OS 2.0 is built specifically for touch screens. While a great novelty to use, Touch Flo 3D was a big pain in the arse when I used it. Why? Because it still had all the clumsy behavior quirks as Windows. It’s menus, its UI, not fun at all. Sure, touch flo adds a nice polish on the front-end, but when you get down to the nitty gritty it still looks and behaves like WM 6.0. Not to mention the extra force I needed to accomplish anything on a Diamond, it felt as if I would get more done using a stylus than my fingers. A good comparison is loading up Windows XP on a PC and than slapping a Mac OS X skin on it. It actually makes the PC run crappier. It looks kind of cool, but when you open up an app, the functionality reminds that you’re still using Windows.
When people bring up mobile OSes the most popular argument is 3rd party apps. Okay, granted Windows offers a wide selection of productivity and entertainment software (which makes me wonder why Asians are so damned fond of Nokia’s Symbian). I myself really love mobile office. The only problem I see with that? MS are bastards when it comes to treating their developers well. This means that Apple’s free SDK and no squabble 70% profit share using their secure iTunes apps store will eventually lead to some outstanding software. In fact, in the 3 weeks since its release, it already has produced great titles. If that is the heart of all OSes, I am extremely excited about Android from Google. Hopefully Nokia smartens up their smartphones and switches over to that when it’s finally released.
Otherwise, HTC isn’t the iPhone killer, but it sure says a whole lot when you’re talking about something that needs to be “killed” within it’s first fiscal since the original release. It took the iPod a good 4 years before people started talking about its killer.
Good starting point for a comparison.
But here’s one VERY important point: iPhone’s Applications (many of which are free) are an ever expanding and useful means to harness/unlock even more value out of your phone (errrrr…computer in your pocket). I’m astounded by the innovation already taking place at the iTunes App Store.
I like HTC products as well, but it’s hard to ignore the innovative community that surrounds Apple products and the App Store. Hope that the international community can take advantage of this as well.
htc touch diamond all the way, much prefer to the iphone as iphone is more about the name then the phone and technology itself. Love office mobile as well 🙂
worst comparison of all time,
they dared calling it ultimate comparison.
uptime not even in same measure, (minutes vs hours)
no resolution spec nor processor spec..
definitively lack infos.
If the Diamond doesn’t have the microSD card do you upload tomtom via the USB? I have a tomtom micro for the trinity, but none in the diamond?
Probably a bit late, but:
Mark the device is AGPS ready which in a nutshell means that yes it is GPS ready, all you will need is the software to install on your phone like tomtom or something like that. (Trial versions are available online but I must insist you buy the product if you decide to keep it).
Common units and terminology, please?
Either stick with minutes or stick with hours, and please don’t expect everyone to obviously match up WCDMA with 3g…
Something like:
HTC Touch Diamond: 270 minutes’ talktime for 3G and up to 330 minutes on GSM networks, whereas standby is 396 hours and 285 hours respectively. When video-calling, users will get up to 145 minutes on 3G.
iPhone 3G: Up to 300 minutes of talk time using 3G, or 600 minutes using GSM, standby is 300 hours, five hours of 3G internet use and six hours of Wi-Fi internet use, seven hours of video playback and up to 24 hours of audio playback.
Could somebody please tell me what GPS “Ready” means? I read of somebody selling a Touch Diamond because after they purchased it, they sold it because it needed an addition device to use the GPS? So i’m confused, do you need like an additional receiver or something or is GPS / aGPS “Ready” just a bad use of wording!
To clarify the conflicting comments on memory expansion; there are two versions of the phone, the “Touch Diamond” which does not have memory expansion (presumably to maintain its slim dimensions) and the thicker “Touch Pro” with the slide out keyboard – it is this model that has the microSD™ memory card (SD 2.0 compatible) expansion capability.
HTC Diamond HASN’T any kind of expansion slot. May be in future versions…
HTC Diamond HASN’T any kind of expansion slot. May be in future versions…
HTC Diamond HASN’T any kind of expansion slot. May be in future versions…
You also should mention the fact that the micro SD slot is SDHC, which means up to 32 GB of possible expansion.
yeah? got a 32gb card to fit in? yet? anyone? iphone the best and ever will be, just for the sheer third party apps alone, hang on all together, hmm hmmm heard of the 3gs? 32 gb from the box.
Also, you didn’t compare screen resolutions – iPhone is 320×480 whilst Diamond is 480×640
Erm, are you sure that HTC Diamond has a Micro-SD card slot? I heard otherwise!
Also you should point out that the iPhone has 3.6Mbps HSDPA, whilst the Diamond has the usual 7.2Mbps of most modern phones.
