Texas chips allow DVD copying

In a move that is sure to outrage Hollwood movie studios, Texas Instruments has announced its latest generation of chips will enable personal video players to record DVD discs and satellite box office movies, even when they are copy-protected – writes Barry Fox in this week’s ERT.

The first player/recorders to use the new chips are from French manufacturer Archos which manufactures the AV300 range of products, including the recently-launched £450 AV320 and £550 AV340. Says Jean-Marc Darchy, director of TI’s semiconductor division in Nice, France: “It is your right to make a copy of your own DVD and there is no agreement on DVD video protection and digital rights management.”
