Virgin to offer Napster-style service in UK?
Virgin has become the latest major player to announce a music download service for the UK. Scheduled to go live on September 2nd Virgin Digital kicks off with over a million tracks which are available in the secure Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. There’s still some confusion as to what else Virgin will offer on the site, the US version offers a subscription service with unlimited downloads and streaming, a bit like Napster, but there’s no confirmation that this will be available to UK music lovers. Virgin is saying that the site will offer track sampling, internet radio (over 60 themed Virgin stations) and rip and burn software. Virgin hasn’t yet revealed the price of the service, but its US equivalent offers music at 99 cents per track.
