Are your digital rights being eroded?
The National Consumer Council (NCC) claims anti-piracy efforts are eroding our rights to digital media, with consumers facing security risks to their equipment, limitations on use of products and unfair contract terms.
The consumer group said people were finding that they couldn’t make compilations for their own use or easily move digital copies between separate devices, which is "constraining the legitimate consumer use of digital content". Practices that also undermined consumer protection and data protection laws. As a case in point, the NCC referred to Sony BMG’s recent s anti-piracy system, which until recently, used virus-like techniques to hide itself.
Are the regulations on piracy and the limits placed on digital downloads legitimate practice – or are they restricting your use of of legally purchased products? Let us know what you think.
