Sony Batteries Investigated by US Safety Officials
Hard on the heels of the exploding Dell laptop battery story, already being dubbed ‘batterygate’, US Consumer Safety Officials are now investigating all Sony-made Lithium rechargeable batteries, according to Reuters.
Sony makes laptop batteries for a number of other companies, including Apple, Hewlett Packard and Lenovo Group (IBM, as was). A Sony spokesman said the overheating problem was believed to be specific to batteries supplied to Dell but US Consumer Product Safety spokesman Scott Wolfson said ‘We recognise that the batteries manufactured by Sony are not unique to just the Dell notebook computers’.
Indeed the suspect cells may well have been used in a wide array of gadgets, including digital cameras, cell phones, camcorders and MP3 players and industry pundits are now estimating the recall could end up costing Sony more than $225.
