AIST's New Robotic Hand implies world of techno-Simpsons to come

Our new robot overlords will likely have three fingers, not four, if the new AIST robotic hand for blue-collar robots is any indication. Robot hands in the past have either been overly pretty, fragile or specialized, whereas these may not be quite as beautiful as the standard human hand, but can apply the same 15 Newtons of fingertip force and are about the same size: 18 cm from wrist to fingertip and 8.4 cm across the palm. Now it’s just a matter of programming them to play the Holophonor. [GT]
