Although Toshiba has made its own seperate HD DVD announcement, most of new standard DVD products are well prepared for the High Def era. A new line up of DVD recorders all over HDMI support and upconversion capabilities.

The top of the line Toshiba D-VR650 Super Multi Drive DVD recorder + VCR combination unit offers recording and playback of DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW and a 4 Head Hi-Fi VCR capable of high speed bi-directional dubbing in case you fancy copying your DVDs to VHS just for the hell of it. The D-VR600 is essentially the same thing although it lacks the ATSC, QAM and NTSC tuners and each one is DivX Home Theater Certified.

New standalone DVD players have been announced too: the SD-5000 offers HDMI upconversion to 720p and 1080i, digital cinema progressive scan, ColorStream Pro component video output, and DivX, WMA, MP3 and JPEG playback. The player also features a black acrylic front panel with silver trim design. Rounding-up the line is the SD-4000, which offers the same thing but without the HDMI support or upscaling. All three players offer 40mm super-slim chassis design and offer DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW playback. For upconversion to full 1080p you’ll need the SD-6000.
