The Department of Defense’s Iris project goal is to put a genuine router in genuine space by early 2009. While there are plenty of internet-boosting satellites right now, they all work through ground stations or via radio signals to a relay satellite. Iris (Internet Router Protocol in Space) would allow data to flow directly between satellites regardless of ground conditions. While it’s being developed to allow voice, video and data communications for US troops in the field, civilian applications are doubtless to follow. [GT]
