Solar thermal power plant

Harnessing the power of six hundred high-tech mirrors, with thousands more mirrors en route to installation, a new solar thermal plant outside Seville shows the way to the ultimate clean power source. Light is focused on a 40 storey high concrete tower, atop which is a heat exchanger. The exchanger, or receiver, converts the energy into steam, which (as you know) powers the turbines. It generates 11 Megawatts of electricity, enough to power 6,000 homes. While the cost is presently triple that of other power sources, that’s actually pretty affordable for something generating zero pollution. And of course, the price will continue to drop. [GT]
