First Direct offers free text message banking to every customer
Personally, I’m insuring myself against the upcoming banking crisis by taking out every penny I’ve saved and sewing it into my mattress. But for those of you who’ve got accounts with UK bank First Direct, you can now get text message banking for free.
The bank has been offering it for a while now, but at a cost of £2.50 a month. The service is now free, allowing weekly mini-statements, texts to tell you your account balance, and confirmation that payments have arrived in your account.
Why so generous? Well, First Direct has just stopped paying interest on current accounts. They giveth cool technology with one hand, while takething money away with the other. Sounds about right.
