The news that Fujitsu has announced the first 320GB 7200 RPM 2.5-inch SATA hard drive may not immediately inspire you, but the development — packing a 2.5-inch drive that rivals the performance of 3.5-inch HDDs — will mean more powerful slim desktop PCs, mainstream and gaming laptops.

The MHZ2 BJ drive offers high performance for multimedia and data-intensive applications while at the same time reducing power consumption.

Here are the numbers, for those who need to know:

Available in 80, 120, 160, 250, and 320GB capacities, with SATA 3.0 interface offering 3.0Gb/sec and 1.5Gb/sec, a maximum transfer rate of 300MB/sec.

“Users continue to demand increased HDD capacity and speed, and we are taking an impressive step in that direction by delivering the first 320GB 7200RPM mobile drives,” said Georg Dietsch, Fujitsu Director Storage Products Group EMEA. “In addition, Fujitsu and its customers understand that each future generation of technology must have a smaller carbon footprint without sacrificing quality or performance. The MHZ2 series exemplifies Fujitsu’s dedication to technology innovation and energy efficiency.”
