Kerchoons KBox – pocket-sized vibrating speaker
We’ve seen these things before; vibrating units that turn whatever surface they’re on into giant speakers. The advantage with the amusingly named Kerchoons KBox is that it’s not shaped like a butt plug.
This time, what we’re looking at is a USB-charged device with around 20 hours of battery life and it’s about the size of an iPhone. Do I stutter?
It delivers a slightly bottom heavy frequency response of 40Hz – 20KHz, which isn’t massive, but, then, it does only cost £39.99 plus a fiver in the post. It plugs into just about anything you like and uses a patented gel on the underside to make whatever surface it touches vibrate and create the sweet sounds.
Probably not one for the audiophiles but certainly fun, if nothing else.

You have done a nice job.
Ironically, the only person selling these on Amazon nowadays is a market trader by the name of “Kerchoonz”.
Oh, and Andy, (thanks for coming back months later by the way), did you really pay full whack on a pre-order for a speaker you’d never actually heard first?
The review from WIred was pretty funny though – 2 out of 10!

I placed an order on 18th May – It arrived on the day it went on sale 20th may – I think you’ll find you can do this with sites such as play.com and Amazon…it’s a well known concept called pre-order…..D’oh
It’s still doing well – I use it in my office in Salisbury most days and two colleagues have since ordered their own.
Yes, it’s Kerchoonz.
Yes, all the negative reviews are not linked to via the site.
Yes, half the comments are astro-turf be people who couldn’t have actually owned one at the time of posting as they weren’t available beyond review samples…. yawn.
I think you have got to be realistic when it comes to portable speakers. I am very sceptical by nature. However having read various “geek” blogs I decided this was something that fascinated me and I’ve been looking for a good portable speaker for a long time now, and importantly at the right the price.
The KBox actually blew me away how incredible it sounds. Yes, it’s not top-of-the-range as in you won’t be replacing your hi-fi speakers with it but it will be an essential bit of kit for your travels and sharing your music with friends and family when visiting.
I’ve had mine plugged into my MacBook all day and have probably listened to more of my iTunes library than ever before because it is such a joy.
Still on it’s first charge which took around 2hrs, Kerchoonz claims it will last for 20hrs. So far, no signs of stopping!
just was wondering, isn’t it kerchoon’z’? I just got one of these things in the post today. It’s small. This is what it says on the packaging:
K-box Portable Speaker from Kerchoonz uses a hybrid technology of standard speaker, delivering the mid to high frequencies and a Gel Audio driver delivering low end Bass frequencies significantly below what is available from a conventional loudspeaker of a similar size.
Gel Audio is patented loudspeaker technology. When placed on flat, solid surfaces will enhance the bass response and dramatically improve the volume and audio quality.
Powered by a built-in rechargable batter, with up to 20 hours of playtime per charge.
Recharged via USB (Cable included) or 5v USB power adpater (not included)
Audio input via 3.5 mm audio cable. (included)
It also comes with a little black pouch.
I’ve used it today. It is kind of cool because it’s the only mini-speaker I’ve had that has good bass. I have the LG mini-speakers and they sound good, but the bass is missing.
I really like the K-box. I wasn’t expecting it to sound like much but it does sound really good. I have used it on my desk which is made of oak and also on a pine shelf and it sounds very good on wooden surfaces. I don’t like the sound of it as much on glass, but it does make the bass loud on glass. I wouldn’t have heard of this had I not read your post here. So thanks. Keep the new tech gadgets coming!
I just got hold of a K-box and I’d have to say the sound quality is far better than the imu shown in the video above. And it’s a lot smaller. The bass response is fantastic.
