What with the wave of 4G phones offering superfast mobile broadband, we’re gonna need superfast hardware to get the most out of them, right? Forget the latest wave of dual-core smartphones, Qualcomm have just raised the bar even higher by announcing their plans to put QUAD-CORE chipsets in 4G phones over the next two years.

Likely to be based on ARM architecture, the Qualcomm chips will have four cores, each clocked at a staggering 2.5GHz, making the latest wave of dual core phones look about as advanced as a ZX Spectrum.

Stereoscopic 3D recording and playback, multi channel audio, 1080p displays, 20MP image sensors and the new Adreno graphics processor are all ready to go in any new handset which adopts the super powered chip.
