Xbox 720's Kinect 2 sensor will be able to lip read

Microsoft’s next-generation Kinect 2 motion sensor may be accurate enough to lip read, as well as coming built into possible future Xbox 720 consoles.

Sources speaking to Eurogamer told the site that the new peripheral will have the ability to tell which direction gamers are facing, and use vocal pitch and volume, as well as facial movements to determine a player’s emotional state.

Current Kinect limitations are related to ageing USB technology, which the sensor users to transfer data. A 30 frames per second limit and a 320×240 resolution limit hamstring the unit’s potential accuracy. Future Xbox consoles could use a higher resolution CCD [charge-coupled device] to give more power to the Kinect 2.
