ZTE Apache: World's first eight-core smartphone rumoured for 2013
ZTE may become the first smartphone manufacturer to offer an eight-core handset, if the latest rumours are to be believed.
The ZTE Apache is being tipped as the first “Octo-Core” smartphone, and may even touch down in early 2013, ready to be revealed at CES 2013 or MWC 2013.
According to China Times, ZTE have teamed up with MediaTek for the device, which will also offer a 13MP camera, Full HD display and 4G connectivity.
If the rumours prove true, ZTE could even beat Samsung to the eight-core punch, who are thought to be putting a similarly overpowered processor in the Galaxy S4 and Note 3.
The question is, does anyone really even need an eight-core smartphone? Quad-core devices are already arguably overkill, with them offering very little over what a dual-core device can achieve. Sure, it’ll be zippier than the Road Runner on speed, but its likely in reality to be no more than on-the-box numeric posturing.
