Xbox testing “Free play day” game downloads
Microsoft is reportedly testing a new feature on the Xbox One which will allow gamers to download a game and play it for free for a limited time (presumably 24 hours) – before having to pay up to continue.
The test was spotted by some clever Redditors, and shows the game “Max: The Curse of Brotherhood” with a mysterious “Free Play Day with Gold” label.
This could give a hint at a new way of getting people buying games: Letting Xbox Live Gold subscribers essentially rent the game for a day before deciding whether to buy or not.
It sounds like a great idea – who wouldn’t want to try before they buy? This is the first time we’ve seen such a service on consoles, but there is a precedent: PC gamers have had similar on Steam on a selection of games for a while.
We’ll let you know when we hear anything official.
