Facebook adds Safety Check for when your friends are caught up in disaster areas

Have you ever seen a big disaster on the news, and worried that your family and friends might be in the middle of it? Brilliantly, Facebook has just added a new tool that will put minds at ease.

SafetyCheck2

Safety Check will activate when there’s a disaster and Facebook knows that you’re nearby – either through your GPS location, where you’ve checked in recently, or where you list as your home. All you have to do to let everyone know all is well is log on to Facebook and hit “I’m okay”, to give everyone, en masse, that piece of mind.

You’ll also be able to check on the status of your friends in the same area and mark your friends as safe too – just in case they can’t login themselves.

Coincidentally, Apple’s iOS8 recently added an “Emergency” section to the lock screen, that if you’ve set it up will let anyone view your medical details and emergency contacts.

Could we see more apps starting to care about us?

  • This is brilliant…I can see high adoption rates as people would feel compelled to check-in to let give friends and families the peace of mind. Seems like the responsible thing to do anyway
