Is Apple getting into virtual reality?

Could Apple be planning to take on the likes of Oculus Rift? That seems to be the implication judging by a job advert that has appeared looking for an engineer for “virtual reality systems” at the company.

Spotted by Mashable, the advert says:

“We are looking for a software engineer to develop UI and applications to create next generation software experiences. The individual must be able to take participate in collaborative and iterative UI design through the implementation phases & complete performant user experience code for product delivery. This engineer will create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing.”

The implication is clear: Apple is clearly interested in the sorts of VR tech we’ve seen with the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Morpheus headset. What isn’t so clear is what Apple is planning to do: Could it be working on a headset of its own? Or could this simply be the Research & Development department doing some experiments?

We’ll keep you posted.

  • My guess is for a company this big, they would at least assemble a small team to evaluate feasibility of every new potential product category. But you can bet they won’t race to be the first entrant but the most competitive one.
