Is BT YouView going to get the Sky Sports channels?
Interesting legal intrigue this morning as it has emerged that Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, could force Sky to offer its sports channels on rival platforms – including BT’s YouView offering.
According to the news release, the decision was made by the Competition Appeal Tribunal to uphold a ruling from Ofcom in 2010 which would force Sky to share.
What’s interesting about this is that it comes at a time when the pay TV landscape is changing hugely: No longer is it a choice between Sky and Virgin Media, but potentially hundreds of other streaming providers like YouView or EETV (heck, even Netflix probably counts as “Pay TV”).
The upshot though is clear: If you’ve a BT YouView subscriber, you could get the opportunity to watch Sky Sports soon, which means you could soon conceivably watch all of the Premier League matches that are shared between BT Sport and Sky Sports.
