Is Sony planning to kill off its Xperia phones?
Intriguing corporate shuffling from Sony: there are suggestions that the company may stop making phones and concentrate on the PS4 instead.
According to Reuters, Hiroki Totoki who is head of the mobile division said that “We’re not aiming for size or market share but better profits” – in other words, the company can’t afford to keep losing money on phones that not many people are buying.
Despite the Xperia range being some of the most of heavily promoted phones available, Sony’s market share is still relatively small compared to the likes of Samsung.
The speculation is that Sony could abandon Xperia (despite just launching the Z3) and instead double-down on the PS4, which only has one major competitor (Microsoft) and a much bigger market share – not to mention profitability.
It’ll be interesting to see if the rumoured Z4 ever materialises.
