Is TalkTalk planning to buy Blinkbox?
There have been rumours for a while that Tesco is looking to offload its struggling on-demand service Blinkbox – and today we’re hearing reports that it looks like TalkTalk could be a buyer.
According to The Guardian TalkTalk has been TalkTalking to Tesco about a possible sale of the service – which is apparently lost about £25m last year.
Buying BlinkBox might be a savvy move for TT though – BlinkBox has on-demand movies, music and books, which would position it well to compete with the forthcoming juggernaut that is BT after it completes its acquisition of EE – it, like many other ISPs (like Sky and Virgin) already have in-house video on demand services that it can bundle in to its offering.
Tesco shareholders would also presumably be happy, given the company’s difficult year accounts wise – and the fact that on-demand movies is losing focus a bit from retailing groceries.
We’ll keep you posted.
