Spotify has just got a little bit more annoying
It seems that Spotify is a little bit worried about Jay Z’s new streaming service Tidal, if a new feature is anything to go by.
In the latest version of both Spotify’s desktop and mobile app there’s a new “Tweet the Beat” feature, which will pop up whilst you’re in the app, encouraging you to tweet about the song you’re listening to.
According to The Verge, the feature will appear randomly whether or not you’re a paid up Spotify subscriber.
Whilst this may seem like a simple mechanism to encourage users to share music (and plug Spotify to their followers in the process), the conspiracy theorists have another explanation: As people will likely include the artist’s own Twitter handle, it will remind musicians just how many Spotify listeners they have – and therefore warn them, or the people in charge of handling their social media at least, not to pull their catalogues from the service in favour of Tidal or others.
