Launching at CES in Last Vegas this week is this new solar powered camera from ACTIVEON. Called the SOLAR X, it offers 4K performance and includes a two-inch touchscreen, built-in 1100mAh rechargeable battery, built-in Wi-Fi and digital image stabilisation.

It captures 4K video at 2160p with a 16 megapixel CMOS video sensor and also includes a seven-element F/2.4 high precision bright glass lens that provides four different levels of field of view. The SOLAR X boasts a graphical menu-driven interface allowing a user to toggle between video and photo modes. As a digital camera, it can shoot 16MP images with a burst rate of six frames per second.

By connecting to its the solar panel case, the X Station, the panels absorb and store energy from the sun to charge the SOLAR X. Utilising the Burst Speed Charging technology, the X Station is able to charge the SOLAR X camera up to 80% in 30 minutes and to 100% in 60 minutes. This provides a total battery life of six hours; two hours from the built-in battery and an additional four hours with a fully charged X Station.

ACTIVEON SOLAR X, CX GOLD, and CX action cameras have an iOS and Android smartphone app for easily controlling the cameras’ functions, monitor live video, and share content directly to social media. When connected to Wi-Fi, the SOLAR X and CX Gold can automatically upload content to the ACTIVEON Cloud.

In terms of connections, The SOLAR X has a micro HDMI output and is also compatible with nearly 40 additional accessories including eight different mounts, seven grips, selfie sticks, diving glasses and a Wi-Fi remote.

Says Frank Donato, Executive Vice President of ACTIVEON: “We’ve designed the SOLAR X to be like nothing else in the market today, with a slender profile, a lens system protected by smooth, toughened glass, and a unique recharging system that uses the sun itself to recharge its battery. So even if you’re in the middle of nowhere, you can keep recording your adventures.”

ACTIVEON expects the action camera market to nearly double in size in the next two years, to nearly 20 million units annually. The SOLAR X is expected to reach retail stores in the UK in March 2016.
