God Of War wins Game of the Year, Red Dead Redemption 2 wins four at Game Awards
PlayStation exclusive video game God Of War has been named game of the year at the industry’s prestigious Game Awards.
Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest game by Grand Theft Auto creator Rockstar Games was the biggest winner on the night, picking up four awards, including best narrative and best performance for Roger Clark’s role as main character Arthur Morgan.
Fortnite was also among the winners – picking up the award for best ongoing game and best multiplayer.
There were also wins at the Los Angeles event for Monster Hunter: World, Forza Horizon 4 and Overwatch. The awards are traditionally used as a stage to announce new games for the first time, as well as hand out prizes.
God Of War held off competition from big-name rivals including Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and another PlayStation exclusive in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
It was one of three awards for the Sony title, also picking up best game direction and best action/adventure game.
Among the new game announcements was a post-apocalyptic sequel to Far Cry 5, Far Cry: New Dawn.
Fortnite maker Epic Games also launched its new PC and Mac games store, designed to compete with Valve’s Steam store.
The store went live during the show featuring a range of indie video games including the newly-launched Ashen, as well as Darksiders III and older titles such as Super Meat Boy.
No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games also revealed a new animated game called The Last Campfire, while a new Mortal Kombat game – Mortal Kombat 11 – was also announced.
