A set-top box for streaming movies right off the internet and straight to your telly? We’ve heard that one before. Apple TV does it, Xbox 360 does it… and although each of those are technically impressive, they haven’t set everyone’s world alight. So at first glance it seems that the Netflix Player by Roku doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.
However, where its rivals have let themselves down – being limited to fairly narrow selection of content – Netflix might be able to find an edge. As the US’s largest online DVD rental service, it doesn’t lack for potential content…

DivX technology extended to PS3 game developers
DivX support has been on the PS3 for a good old while now. Combined with the DNLA media server networking and its excellent upscaling, the only way it could be better at supporting the scurvy arts is to include a copy of BitComet in the next firmware update.
Sony is presumably not just after DivX capabilities to simplify the process of watching illegally distributed video content (although we are extremely thankful for it) and so it’s high time that the technology was extended to further uses. To that end, DivX has just announced that the video encoding system is now available for PS3 game developers as well…

You’d think that disaster that was Gizmondo would be enough to put consumers and investors off for life. Not so apparently: Gizmondo is set to return with a whole new version, fresh support for the existing model and a new focus on homebrew and open source content. It could be with us by the end of the year…
