Microsoft to retire Windows XP at end of June
Microsoft has announced that from June 30, 2008 Windows XP will no longer be available in the shops. Thankfully, the Redmond giant is not withdrawing all its support for the aging operating system – mainstream technical support will continue until April next year and Microsoft won’t actually start saying X-what? until April 2014…
AOL to launch free mobile gaming portal
Mobile gaming is seen as huge source of potential revenue – afterall, there isn’t exactly a shortage of mobile phones or casual gamers out there – but so far few companies have really been able to capitalise on it. Not that they aren’t having a go though; the latest to show an interest is AOL. The Time Warner owned media company is currently gearing up to launch a free, ad-supported mobile gaming portal…
Sony gearing up to relaunch old-gen features on PS3 in US, Europe still waiting
Sony is bracing North America for the arrival of its bleeding edge new technology, the rumbling AND motion sensing DualShock 3 controller. The very notion was once thought so far beyond the realms of possibility that it must be an affront to God Himself. And so we were left to make do with the SIXAXIS, which detects motion only.
Then of course Nintendo create the Wii remote. Not only does it manage far more impressive feats of motion detecting, but it vibrates and it even has a speaker in it. Sony turned out be telling a few porky pies about combining SIXAXIS motion detection with old-school DualShock rumbling. Thus the DualShock3 was born…

Tabloids paying cash for anti-video games stories
Last week’s Byron Report looked like it might have a calming influence on the ever increasing levels of sensationalism surrounding video games and help bring the public’s perception of games into a more accepting future. I know, I know – it’s appalling really. Thank god for British tabloid rags. They’re ready to step up and dredge every seedy gutter for a story or twenty that will make you lock your doors in terrified realisation that the outside world really is populated by roving bands of video game obsessed PSYCHOPATHS…
Porsche Design's luxury mobile handset now comes in white
Even with all the recent stock market turbulence, it seems the market for high priced, low tech mobile handsets is still going strong. And in case you’re afraid to step outside without your mobile being perfectly colour coordinated with your inflatable (?) jacket and pen, Porsche Design is releasing its whole range of deluxe knickknacks in a luxurious white design…
Rumour: 3G iPhone production starting in May
Backing up other recent rumours, the Bank of America has forecast that Apple will start producing over 10 million 3G-enabled iPhones this year, starting in May. According to the Bank of America’s analyst, the upgraded handset will start shipping as early as June…
Vista SP1 second to fall in hacking contest
The annual CanSecWest security conference hacking contest ‘PWN2OWN’ caused a bit of a stir last week when a suspected Safari browser exploit allowed a MacBook Air to be hacked in just two minutes. It took a fair bit longer, but on Friday Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 running on a Fujitsu U810 finally fell to the efforts of Shane Macaulay, a consultant with Security Objectives…
World of Warcraft bot in legal battle
Hour upon hour of performing repetitive actions for no tangible reward is really the sort of thing you’d expect a robot to do, but according to Blizzard, creator of World of Warcraft, it’s for humans and humans only…
Rockstar announces online Social Club for GTA IV
Thanks to Xbox Live’s Achievements, being able to keep track of your friend’s scores online is what we’ve come to expect from modern games. But with GTA IV being released on both PS3 and Xbox 360, each individual’s closed systems make it difficult to keep track of how your friends are doing if they own a different console. Therefore Rockstar has invented a work around – the Rockstar Social Club…
