Pioneer on a roll, develops 500GB optical disc
Only last month we were heralding Pioneer’s development of a 400GB optical disc, and just a month later its researchers have popped on another four layers and 100GB of storage to create a half terabyte disc.
In actual fact, to be fair, Pioneer has simply confirmed the “viability” of such a disc, which may or may not exist in a laboratory somewhere. The company believes that the technology, based on the same techniques used to make current 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray discs, is easier and cheaper to produce than holographic discs…
Sony launches BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 Blu-ray players in the UK
After a long wait from Sony’s first announcement, its two latest Blu-ray players are finally available to buy in the UK.
We’re probably all well aware of the specifications by now, but as a quick run down, the slim BDP-S350 offers 24p True Cinema mode, HD upscaling of standard definition content to 1080p, and is BD LIve ready, meaning that in October the latest enabling firmware will be available. Pioneer researchers create 16-layer, 400GB discs
Pioneer Corporation has a new world-first on its hands – it has created the first ever 16-layer, read-only optical disc. It has a capacity of 400 GB and every single one of its layers has the same storage as a Blu-ray disc. Pop that one in your pipe, Sony.
Sony to open up Blu-ray as a "social network"
Sounds a bit like someone is mixing up their internet buzzwords. The head of Sony Electronics’ US division, Stan Glasgow, has some interesting ideas for the future of Blu-ray, revealing that “We’re going to have to open [Blu-ray] up as a social network–not just contributions of Sony and other Blu-ray partners.”

Sony adding in-game XMB access and Trophies to PS3 "soon" thanks to 2.40 firmware update
Finally, a year and a half after PlayStation3 launched in some bits of the world, Sony is adding the in-game messaging features its fans have been gagging and pleading for every single day since PS3 first flopped into big, unwanted piles on shop shelves.
Confirmation was given on the Official PlayStation Blog, where Sony Network top-cheese Eric Lempel said “We’re happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include XMB access in-game.”
Lempel then went on to confirm another addition – the arrival of Sony’s clone of the much-loved Xbox 360 point-scoring Achievements system…
