CES 2008: Sharp press conference: surprise, surprise – more massive tellies are on their way
The Sharp CES press conference kicked off with the usual amount of backslapping and general optimism about the state of the HDTV market. And why not – according to Sharps figures and some really rather bland graphs the LCD market is skyrocketing. Sharp expects to have shipped over 74m units by the end of 2007 and 96m by the end of next year, which is probably a lot more than I can count on all my fingers and toes.

For those of you getting weary of big TVs, some comfort: Sony Ericsson has unleashed some new mobile phones at CES this afternoon. Pick of the bunch is the W760, a Walkman handset with HSDPA, motion-controlled gaming, and GPS.
CES 2008: Samsung's Duo HD BD-UP5500 player blends Blu-ray and HD DVD
The dust hasn’t settled yet from the seismic HD format war developments on Thursday and Friday, and it won’t for a few days, with dozens of companies announcing new products in one, other or both Blu-ray and HD DVD. For example, Samsung just unveiled its new duo HD player, the BD-UP5500.
CES 2008: SC-HMX20C 1080p HD camcorder makes a splash
Still on a Samsung tip – the company announced loads of stuff during its press conference – how about the SC-HMX20C Progressive HD Flash-based camcorder? It’s got a 1080p mode with 30 frames-per-second recording, and comes with a docking station to recharge it or connect to an HDTV to watch your footage.
CES 2008: LG announces plethora of LCD and Plasma screens, wheels out Mark Levinson
It wasn’t all grim at LG however, admittedly. There was a bit of a ‘sleb cameo (for audiophiles, anyway), with Mark Levinson (pictured), founder of Mark Levinson Audio Systems, who specialise in ultra high-end digital audio processors, amps and sources.
Plus, as you’d expect with any consumer tech show, they announced a bunch of new LCD and Plasma TVs, with all 1080p flat panel screens being ISF-ready, and most being THX certified.
There’ll be four new product series and eight new models in terms of Plasmas alone, with six of the models walloping us with full 1080p viewing. Beautiful.
The PG 70 series will be this year’s flagship series, with full HD and free of wires. The PG 60 will apparently have a ‘vanishing edge’ design…
CES 2008: Panasonic’s new Viera TVs – 46-inch plasma and 37-inch LCD
At its press conference today, Panasonic took the wrappers off its Viera HDTV range for 2008, including the 46-inch TH-46PZ80 plasma and the 37-inch TC-37LZ800. Across the whole range, Panny is offering better contrast ratios, SD card slots, HDMI connections and a Game Mode feature that cuts time lag when playing console games.

It’s all about the tellies at CES so far this year, at least as far as the big consumer electronics manufacturers go. However, rather than willy-waving about biggest and slimmest screens, they’re focusing more on features.
