Bill Gates unleashes horde of mosquitos into packed conference hall
Screaming “Not only poor people should experience this!”, last night Bill Gates released a swarm of mosquitoes into the audience at TED – a technology conference in California. You just can’t make this stuff up.
Gates, whose foundation spends millions of dollars on combating malaria, was making a point that rich countries don’t pay the disease enough attention because it doesn’t really impact their citizenry. Still, hell of a PR stunt!
The Twittersphere reported the swarm as it was release, with eBay founder and Twitter CEO Pierre Omidyar providing the best commentary.

UPDATE: Seinfeld not canned, Bill wants to know what you think
I promised I’d tell you when the new ad was out, and here it is. I burst out laughing in the office in the middle of that, which was mildly embarrassing, but a good sign for Microsoft. Highly recommended. In a not-so-good sign, the agency behind the adverts has said that Seinfeld hasn’t been officially canned – they still plan at least one more spot featuring him and Gatesey.
Microsoft bin Jerry Seinfeld and move to reclaim "I'm a PC"
Someone at Microsoft’s listening to Gary Cutlack, and his hatred of Microsoft’s ill-judged ads featuring Jerry Seinfeld. Or maybe they’re just listening to the entire rest of the internet. Microsoft have wisely binned Seinfeld in favour of a whole bevvy of stars in the second phase of their new Windows ad campaign…
Bill Gates flexes his acting skills with Jerry Seinfeld, as Microsoft kicks off $300m Windows ad campaign
It is an advert about nothing. This clip made its debut on US television last night, bewildering viewers by showing Jerry Seinfeld and Mr Gates trying on shoes in a discount shoe shop. Then buying some shoes. Then leaving.
But it’s not an advert for shoes. Neither man has fallen that far since quitting the things that made them rich and famous. See if you can guess what it’s for.
Of course you know what it’s about and for – Windows. Microsoft’s bunging $300m into a new marketing campaign, designed…
Bill Gates – "using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated"
This fantastic email comes from the archives of Microsoft, and was originally turned over to the authorities during the nasty anti-trust investigation.
In it, Bill releases his epic frustration at the process of trying to download Windows Movie Maker. It’s nice to know that Bill counts the seconds Microsoft web pages take to load and also reboots his PC “every night.” Here are a few quotes – the full email’s after…
Steve Ballmer to retire in 10 years from Microsoft?
Alright, you’ve got me – any excuse to post this picture of Steve Ballmer I spotted over at the Fake Steve Ballmer blog. Still, Bill Gates’s retirement is already big news in the industry, and he’s not even received his gold watch yet!
Originally his late date of work was meant to be June the 27th (22 days left of peace and quiet, Melinda), however he’s still going to be working one day a week, and remain as the chairman of the board. Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft is understandably irritated by Gates’s lack of willingness to hand the reins over to him, commenting recently “I’m not going to need him for anything. That’s the principle. Use him, yes, need him, no”…
Next Windows operating system to use multi-touch technology
Speaking at the opening night of Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference in Southern California yesterday, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and fellow exec Steve Ballmer had a few things to share about the next step for the Windows platform. They were restrained when quizzed about the faults in the current OS, Vista, but acknowledged that in hindsight something could have been done better…
Windows XP Service Pack 3 arrives, brings surprisingly little misery
Windows XP’s latest service pack, SP3, is just a few hours old but the already the complaints are flying Microsoft’s way. Reported problems range from being simply unable to install the thing properly to being unable to boot up once you have, and any number of smaller issues in between.
Windows 7 arriving "sometime in the next year" says Gates, "The hell it is" says the rest of Microsoft
A slightly off-hand comment from Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates managed to set the blogosphere alight with a wave of excited speculation over the weekend. Answering a question about Vista, Gates told the audience at the annual meeting in Miami of the Inter-American Development Bank on Friday:
“Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version [of Windows].”…
Microsoft wants to sell YOU a Surface table this year. Any takers?
Hey kids! Remember that Microsoft Surface gizmo? Uh-huh! The touchy-table. Some exciting news has been leaked via mouthy Steve Ballmer, about the availability of the $10,000 product.
2008 appears to be a lot sooner than what was originally announced, however Ballmer claims that Microsoft is hoping…
