Pioneer on a roll, develops 500GB optical disc
Only last month we were heralding Pioneer’s development of a 400GB optical disc, and just a month later its researchers have popped on another four layers and 100GB of storage to create a half terabyte disc.
In actual fact, to be fair, Pioneer has simply confirmed the “viability” of such a disc, which may or may not exist in a laboratory somewhere. The company believes that the technology, based on the same techniques used to make current 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray discs, is easier and cheaper to produce than holographic discs…

It will reportedly be BD-Live capable, with an HQV video processor that will enable DVD upscaling, and has support for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Little else is known about the…
Blu-ray Xbox 360 rumour rises again – internet says "yes," Microsoft says "no"
The old, very old, boring and no doubt entirely untrue “Blu-ray Xbox 360” rumour surfaced over the weekend – and has already been SHOT DOWN by Microsoft. Again. We are stuck in a time loop where every week we write this very same news.
Gadgety blog TechCrunch started it all by running a news piece – or some might say HIGHLY IRRESPONSIBLE LIE – stating that Microsoft is planning to announce a Blu-ray Xbox 360 tonight. As in, today. This evening. June 9, 2008…
Sony/NEC predicts sub-$100 Blu-ray drives for PCs by year end
In the ongoing push to make Blu-ray hardware more affordable, SonyNEC Optiarc (a joint collaboration between Sony and NEC) has predicted that Blu-ray drives for desktop PCs, capable of reading Blu-ray Discs and reading and writing DVDs and CDs, could go for under $100 (about £60) by the end of 2008.
It’s worth bearing in mind that this is most likely to be a wholesale price for PC manufacturers. Similar drives for notebook PCs could hit the $150 level, while Blu-ray burners will be priced in the region of $150-$200…
