SHINY VIDEO: Quad vs Dual – how many cores do you really need?
Just before Christmas, Dan and I took delivery of a dual core and a quad core machine, and we thought we’d see if it’s actually worth putting four cores into your computer, rather than two. We ran four processor-intensive concurrent tasks – a virusscan, a DVD encode, a 3D game, and then we measured how long it took to unzip a zip file.
The results? Well, you’ll have to watch the video to find out. I’ll just say that I was surprised by the outcome. Let us know your experiences of Quad core vs Dual core chips in the comments below.

Hackers planned massive bank swindle using keyloggers
Let me tell you a story. In 2004, in the dark of night, a gang of hackers broke into Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation in the City of London. With the help of a security guard who was their ‘inside man’, they crept through the dark aisles of cubicles, installing keyloggers on the PCs to record employee’s login details.
SHINY VIDEO REVIEW: Asus N50 laptop
Here’s the surprisingly-snazzy N50 laptop from Asus. Ignore the fact that it’s got an ‘air ionizer’, take note of the high specs and low price instead. Those are what’s really impressive about this machine. Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find out any ‘official’ (non-eBay) price yet. I’ve got an email in to Asus asking, so I’ll update this post when they reply.

Concept Mac "triBook": fold out wings for extra screen space
Portable computers are great but they’re not known for their screen real estate. The concept “triBook” based on an Apple notebook computer is a pretty impressive idea which solves that.
As the photo shows, it features a fairly standard notebook but with two additional side screens that fold out and can be angled to provide additional working/gaming space on each side of the main display. Together, they offer a total 21-inch diagonal widescreen…
Axiotron updates its ModBook Mac tablet
Remember the ModBook “Mac Tablet” we showed off at Macworld a couple of years ago? Well, since Apple hasn’t decided to release its own tablet computer yet, Axiotron has updated its own offering.
The new ModBook is based on a MacBook and features a range of enhancements including full Bluetooth connectivity, lightweight, scratch-resistant exterior, an upgraded drawing surface and AnyView LCD/ForceGlass screen cover which has a better contrast ratio than the first model, plus a firmer drawing surface…
Asus is hiring – boosting laptop manufacturing by 77% to cope with demand
The globally beloved small laptop maker has said it’s well on target to sell 11.3 million notebooks and netbooks this year and will shift a massive 20 million next year, making it one of the “top four” laptop sellers in the world.
Asus is currently hiring old women and buying hair-nets and raw materials in an attempt to boost its factory output by 77% this year, as it attempts to cope with rocketing demand for its extremely wide – and rapidly widening – range of cheap laptops…
YouTube Video of the Week: Computer history via interpretive dance
Again, not quite on YouTube, but I couldn’t resist this adorable video of pixellated office workers taking you through the history of computing in the form of interpretive dance. The music’s rather charming as well. I think we might have a rival to our very own Tech Trumpet.

Sony launches VAIO NS1 notebooks and JS1 all-in-one desktop PCs
Sony continues to speed ahead with the rollout of its new VAIO range of PCs, with the introduction of the NS1 Series of notebook PCs and the JS1 Series of all-in-one desktops.
Sony states that the PCs are designed for everyday home use, which would suggest that they’re not the most powerful systems the company has ever produced. They’re no pushovers either.
The NS1 Series of notebook PCs feature an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, a Blu-ray combo drive, 15.4-inch X-black 1,280 x 800 LCD, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 graphics unit…
