Winamp – 10 years old and BACK to battle iTunes
Pretty much everyone’s first MP3 player back when the piracy scene exploded into life in the late-90s, it’s been a little quiet for Winamp over that last few years thanks to everyone, bizarrely, preferring to pay for music and use things like iTunes instead.
Well Winamp – and the 62 million people who still regularly use older versions – could be
iPod obsolete, Walkman device will rule, says boss of Sony-owned record label
Rick Rubin, co-chairman of Columbia Records, has publicly stated that the iPod and iTunes models are doomed, with the way to go being subscription-based, music-anywhere, services.
In fact, he thinks the whole music business will only be saved by going to a subscription model, but he’s quick to pick on the iPod. “The iPod will be obsolete, but there would be a Walkman-like device you could plug into speakers at home,” he said.
Rubin’s motivation is that adopting cheap music subscription services will curb illegal downloads, believing that “If music is easily available at a price of five or six dollars a month, then nobody will steal it.”

Opinion: Britney Spears' Gimme More single shows the positive side of internet leaks
Stuart Dredge writes…Heard Britney’s new single yet? It’s ace. No, really. It’s called ‘Gimme More’, and it’s just leaked onto the internetweb, via the website of a New York radio station.
It’s already all over YouTube. Not too long ago, this would’ve sent her record company bananas with piracy-fearing rage, threatening lawsuits on anyone who ever came into contact with the track. But ‘Gimme More’ is actually a prime example of the importance of these ‘leaks’ to the music industry, especially when it comes to Big Comebacks.
Why? Well, Britney is benefiting from ‘Gimme More’s online ubiquity for several reasons…

We often credit (and drool at) Japan with having the most advanced technology, and bemoaning the lack of such gadgetry in the UK, but you don’t have to look so far away to find cutting edge technology and services.
Manx Telecom, which serves the Isle of Man, has just launched a converged content delivery service called Mobile Downloads, which will enable its 75,000-strong subscriber base to purchase, download, and consume music from both mobile devices and PCs, thanks to the new iO Mobile Experience Platform.
Manx claims to be the first operator in the world to deliver such a service from iO global, having also credited as the first in the world to launch a 3.5G mobile service.
Opinion: Downloading a pirated copy of The Simpsons Movie shot with a mobile phone? Madness!
You have to feel sorry for the 21-year-old Aussie who was arrested this weekend for bootlegging The Simpsons Movie using his mobile phone, before uploading it to the internet. He probably just wanted to see if the mobile manufacturers’ promises of ‘DVD-quality video recording’ were true.
Aussie arrested for pirating 'The Simpsons Movie'
A poor Australian man was made the scapegoat of the entire internet piracy scene on Friday, when police raided his home.
