Qtrax redeems itself with a June 18th relaunch date for Universal and EMI downloads

Qtrax-logo-wings.jpg

After the initial controversy surrounding Qtrax, they’ve managed to improve upon their image and actually become a fairly legitimate download service. Having signed up their second major record label, they’ve now announced that June 18th will be the relaunch date for the beta version of the service.

Currently you’d be hard pressed to actually find a song that’s worth downloading on Qtrax – if you can find any that actually will download – however in just five days songs from Universal Music Group and EMI will be available to download, although it’s still unclear whether EMI songs…

Microsoft wants more "music" on Windows Mobile

windows-mobile-music-store-probbaly-on-the-way.png

Microsoft is clearly a bit jealous of how well the iPhone/iTunes/iPod trinity is raking in cash for the Apple machine, so is keen to try and boost the amount of music services available “on the go” to users of Windows Mobile phones.

“One thing that Apple has leveraged on is the music scenario, and I think that that is something the operators and ourselves are partnering on, just to make sure that consumers can use live music in the best way,” Andy Lees, senior vice president…

Firefox 3 creeps closer to official launch, as Release Candidate 2 arrives

firefox_icon.jpgFirefox pushes on towards an official launch with yesterday’s launch of the Release Candidate 2 version. Mozilla’s eagerly awaited third version came out of beta last month, and now web developers and other interested parties are crawling all over a version which should be fairly close to the final version.

There’s a mountain of improvements in Firefox 3 compared to Firefox 2, many relating to the important issues of security, reliability, and performance…

Help Firefox 3 set a Guinness World Record – most downloads in a single day

firefox-3-download-day.jpg

Everyone likes Firefox, apart from Microsoft and Apple, although it’s probably Steve Jobs’s guilty pleasure to sit naked on his Dell, surfing on Mozilla’s browser while listening to the Zune and whipping himself with a copy of Windows.

Now, I should imagine most of us have never been kind enough to donate anything to Mozilla for all their hard work but we’ll all probably download Firefox 3 soon enough, if you haven’t already bagged the beta.

Instead, why not give a little something back that won’t even cost you a penny by helping the company break the Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads in a 24-hour period…

scarlett-johansson-album-release-napster.jpg

Yes, really. This is not a May 12 Fools joke.

Everyone’s favourite large-chested, pasty-faced art house actress has only gone and done an album of songs. She’s called it “Anywhere I Lay My Head” – an invitation to lewd comments if ever there was – and you can listen to bits of it RIGHT NOW on Napster.

Subscribers to whatever service it is Napster’s running these days can stream…

Radiohead giving up its music download model – In Rainbows scheme was a "one off" says Thom

radiohead-dumps-free-distribution-model.jpg

While Radiohead is still to say how much money it made out of letting users set their own price to buy (or have for free) its In Rainbows album (HINT: lots), it looks like that’s the first and last time the band will release anything in such a way.

Speaking of the revolutionary – and much-copied – download scheme to the Hollywood Reporter, Thom Yorke said “It was a one-off in terms of a story. It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone…

The Pirate Bay goes Grand Theft Auto IV themed – as 1000s of people download GTA torrents

grand-theft-auto-iv-downloads-pirate-bay.jpg

Good god, The Pirate Bay sure does love making a nuisance of itself.

As Grand Theft Auto IV publisher Take Two tries to fight fires and extinguish the YouTube videos, torrents, and various other leaks regarding GTA IV ahead of its April 29 global release, everyone’s favourite ABOVE THE LAW piracy portal has stuck two fingers up at T2 and developer Rockstar – renaming itself The Liberty Bay…

Actual images of Guitar Hero Mobile – and it's out now

guitar_hero-III-mobile-pictured.jpg

Guitar Hero’s everywhere. On everyone’s consoles. On the DS. On the news. In blenders. And now it’s actually available in miniature format, should you have a decent enough mobile phone to handle it.

And it looks like that. That picture there. No, the one to the left. The one of the phone? See that thing on the screen? Yes? Good! That’s what GH III looks like running on a mobile phone. That’s also the frame rate it’ll run at on my ancient Nokia, too…

MotleyCrue-rock-band-single-release.jpg

What is it with ageing rockers and cutting-edge music distribution schemes? Last month we revealed that Def Leppard was releasing a single via Guitar Hero III, now “The Crue” is releasing its new track exclusively via rival music game Rock Band.

Motley Crue’s single is called ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ and it’ll appear on the American Rock Band download list next Tuesday, for the equivalent of 99 cents – on both Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation…

UK supermarket giant Tesco announces Tesco Digital download store

tesco-download-store.jpg

When throwing a bag of carrots and some paper towels into you virtual shopping trolley at Tesco, you’ll also be able to chuck in a few MP3s from the likes of Kylie, Rihanna, and Pete. Doherty, that is, although I wouldn’t place him on top of the bananas in your trolley, you don’t want them to go off too quickly.

Launching in May, Tesco Digital will be selling music downloads, with TV, films and games offered in the near future. The albums and singles will be available…
