Yamaha intros DVX-1000 DVD/audio system
Yamaha has introduced the DVX-1000 audio system with built-in DVD player. Though it’s just a stereo system with subwoofer, it simulates 7.1 channel surround sound using Yamaha’s AIR SURROUND XTREME technology. Not great for the purists, but where space and price is of the essence, not a bad solution.
Standards group pushing for single Blu-ray licensing organisation
Now that Blu-ray has successfully crushed that young HD DVD upstart ‘neath its sizeable heel, there’s that whole messy business of streamlining the business into something workable – you know, so that you won’t need to sell off a spare kidney to buy a player and that a movie collection won’t cost you the remaining one. One idea being aired by MPEG LA, the standards and licensing group, is that there should be a single organisation set up to handle the licensing of all the many and varied patents necessary to make a proper Blu-ray product.
Toshiba launches custom-made DVD burner for Gigashot HD video cameras
No matter how much storage you get on-board your camcorder, you’ll use it up in no time. Which is why something like Toshiba’s new DVD burner should find a ready market.
Toshiba launching wide range of new DVD players and combos
Toshiba has announced ten new DVD models, including five standalone DVD players, three DVD recorders (two with hard drives), and even two with VCRs built-in, for those of you still attached to tape.
Three standard DVD players — the SD-180E, SD-185E, and SD-280E — offer usual functionality you’d expect, including JPEG viewing, DivX playback, and MP3 support.
Taking a step up, the SD-480E and SD-580E offer upscaling of standard DVDs to 1080p high definition, feature HDMI outputs to connect to a suitable TV, and have Toshiba’s REGZA-Link which synchronises compatible equipment using a single remote control unit.

Brando claims their portable DVD drive is perfect for Eee PC or MacBook Air. O RLY?
Either something’s been lost in translation between Hong Kong and the Western world, or Brando’s Windows-only external DVD drive can really work on Apple’s MacBook Air, and ASUS’ Eee Pc as they’re claiming.
Yes, I am as confused as you are.
At $78, it won’t…
Win a DVD boxset of Planet Earth, with thanks to Tech Digest and Love Earth

High-definition format war? What high-definition format war?
Correctly realising that about 99.9999% of the world’s population is still perfectly happy to watch movies on DVD – or even lower quality DivX rips burned to DVD – smarting HD DVD format backer Toshiba is wisely also covering all last-generation bases with this – a 22″ LCD TV with built-in DVD player:
Apple close to launching iTunes movie rental service, "sources" claim
According to unnamed sources cited by a Financial Times article published last week, Apple could be very close to announcing a movie rental service via its iTunes music store.
We’ve already written about rumours of such a move though that was based on geeks perusing web site source code. This is the Financial Times, so it must hold some more clout. Right?
