Europe votes "no" to internet bans for file sharers. We are saved!
The EU has just voted against the idea of banning file-sharers from using the internet, in a rare victory for the right-thinking common man.
Any possible plan to criminalise file-sharing was rejected by EU members, along with the concept of axing the web connections of those caught Bittorrenting the entire output of Hollywood overnight. It’s OK. You’re not going to get done for it any more…
British and French iPhone stocks run dry, more "evidence" for 3G model?
According to Valleywag, who would obviously know what’s happening here in Britain and in France, there are no iPhones to be had. This reflects the current US shortage, though there appear to be no obvious problems with the Apple or O2 online stores…
Three strikes and you're back to reading books – UK internet anti-piracy rules revealed
Good god, they’re actually going ahead with it.
Next week, says The Times, the government will introduce its Green Paper outlining plans to officially adopt a similar anti-piracy stance to the one used in France – get caught downloading copyrighted material three times and your internet connection will be terminated…
French iPhones may or may not be completely unlocked
Towards the end of last week, reports emerged that the French iPhone may not have been as fully unlocked as was first thought.
Just to bring you up to speed on the whole affair, French law prevents a mobile phone being tied exclusively to one carrier. Hence, Orange had to offer to unlock an iPhone from its network if a customer asked.
iPhone Atlas reported that foreign SIM cards could not be used with the device, although it didn’t appear to mention the source of the information.
UK iPhone fans warned off unlocked French handsets
Lots of talk in today’s papers about the prospect of hordes of Brits travelling to France to try and pick up an unlocked iPhone in the near future. It’s all because of French law, which apparently requires all phones to be offered in unlocked versions, even if the manufacturers have signed an exclusive deal with an operator (Orange, in the iPhone’s case).
Washing machine for dogs invented in France! Mon dieu!
We saw something similar at CES earlier in the year, so I’m presuming there’s a dire need for, err, dog washing machines? Are pet owners really that lazy that they can’t pop Ralph in the bathtub, or get the garden hose fired up, that they have to plunk him in an actual $30,000 machine which does all the work for you?
*Sigh* Apparently so. Figures…
Top 5 gadgets for Jonny Wilkinson and the England Rugby World Cup team (for their match on Saturday night)
Erm, if you didn't know, there's some sporting thing happening tomorrow. The final of a rugby tournament I think it is, in Paris in France. Only joking, it's the Rugby World Cup Final tomorrow with Jonny Wilkinson leading our brave boys in the fight against South Africa to hold onto the trophy. COME ON!!
But just in case they need some help off-the-field, here's some technology that might give them a gee-up before the crucial tie…
Samsung Ultra F700 rebranded as the Croix
Finally, some fresh news regarding Samsung’s F700 smartphone we saw back at 3GSM in February, and not just speculation such as whether it’ll be Armani-branded or not.
The slinky looking phone has been given a much easier name to remember it by, Croix. As you can probably guess, ‘Croix’ is French for ‘cross’, and as it’s got a four-directional touch input, it’s not just a made-up pretentious name. Using…
Daily Tech Hotlinks for 26-June-2007: Librarians, ATMs, German Gmail, internet radio, French BlackBerries
– College librarians have been given a rap over the knuckles and told to start ‘thinking like video gamers’. Err…so start thinking about boobs, Monster Munch, and how wrong the BBFC are for banning Manhunt 2?
– Who knew that the world’s first ATM was installed in a branch of Barclays in Enfield, north London, 40 years ago this week? The maximum withdrawal allowance was a tenner, which “was regarded then as quite enough for a wild weekend”, the 82-year old inventor claims…
Apple faces legal action from EU nations over iTunes lock-in
Apple is coming under increasing pressure from several EU nations who want to force the company to unlock its iTunes software to make it operable with third-party (ie not iPod) MP3 players. Organisations representing France, Germany, Finland, and Norway, are…
