Swinxs brings out the kid in you and feeds him microchips
This is Swinxs, and it’s sort-of like a games console, but not really. I suppose it’s the logical extension of the Wii’s “getting people active” push. It’s a brightly coloured box, with armbands containing RFID chips, that lets you play a bunch of traditional party games, but with actually-quite-awesome technological extras…
Atari getting behind Apple's App Store – Missile Command and Super Breakout on the way
Not only are Missile Command and Super Breakout both coming to the App Store for play on iPhone and iPod touch, but they’re also getting tacked-on motion controls to make playing them in public more than a little embarrassing. It is the way of the future.
Missile Command uses the Multi Touch feature to allow missile placement with your fingers, a clever idea which ought to emulate the original arcade machine’s trackball controller far better than any other modern day console could…
EA mistakes Finsbury Park for Venezuela, hijacks petrol station
Electronic Arts decided to disrupt North London’s rush-hour commuter traffic this morning by staging a mock hijack of a petrol station in Finsbury Park and giving away £20,000 worth of free petrol…
Will Wright is a big fan of Spornography
As we previously reported, Spore – the forthcoming game from Sims creator Will Wright, is full of penises. Maxis, for their part, have been deleting these dongle-monsters from their database as rapidly as possible, but Will has been chatting to the Associated Press about how he feels about Sporenography…
Nokia hopes old Java game will help kickstart N-Gage gaming – Dogz available for download
We don’t want to go and start unnecessarily “hating on” Nokia’s N-Gage gaming plans, but Dogz? A game that’s clearly a homage (homage is less likely to offend people than saying RIP OFF) to the numerous other pet games out there? Is this really what mobile gamers want?
Not to mention the fact that Dogz has been available in Java form for quite some time, since 2006 in fact. And that sequel Dogz 2 is already available for other Java handsets. It is at least marginally updated…
OPINION: 25,000 gaming lawsuits story is much more complex than it appears
The other day we covered the story that Codemasters and Atari, among a few other publishers, are suing 25,000 people who are alledged to have downloaded games. Seems fairly black and white, doesn’t it? Downloading games is still illegal, despite how widespread and popular it is. But the folks at GamesIndustry.biz, in their daily newsletter, have delved a little deeper into the topic, and I wanted to share with you some of the things they point out…
Brummies win Gold at Championship Gaming Series
At last.. There but for the grace of God go some British winners. Champions of the world. Bow before them. Make praise to those that have done what so many have failed to do before. These 10 brave souls have defeated, nay, slain the forces of global competition and emerged the unlikely victors! All hail The Salvo… The mighty Birmingham Salvo.
Yes, you heard right. Britain has won a major trophy. Okay, so it’s not a sport’s trophy, like a Jules Remet or an Olympic medallion.. and it is for winning the World Computer Game Championships.. But.. but it’s a trophy god-dammit, and we won it. It deserves celebrating.
Nintendo's Wii "aids bonding" and will bring about an end to all crime and dysfunction
It’s Happy News Friday! When you spend all of Saturday night playing Wii Sports or Smash Bros. or whatever it is people do with their Wiis other than put them away in cupboards until next Christmas, you’re not just playing a game – you’re making a difference.
A survey by stat-counter GfK NOP found that 83% of people in the UK think Wii “increases family interaction” thanks to its collection of simplistic party games that even Great Uncle Wilfred can manage to play after half a bottle of whiskey…
BBFC says PEGI is just "a couple of blokes"
In the wake of the Byron Review, tension is beginning to simmer beneath the surface of the normally peaceable games ratings industry. Dr Tanya Byron’s recommendations put the UK ratings board, the BBFC, in a strong position to take on more responsibility (and work, and pay cheques presumably) but its rival, PEGI, is not out of the running yet. Big names in the industry like EA and Microsoft have come down in favour of the European-wide PEGI service.
Noel Gallagher believes video games are partly to blame for knife crime culture
Poor old Noel must be getting old – he’s started blaming things he doesn’t understand for all the wrongs of society. Today, it’s knife crime that’s the fault of games.
Speaking to Radio 1’s news show, Gallagher said “People say it’s through violent video games and I guess that’s got something to do with it,” showing that he hasn’t lost his knack of recycling other people’s ideas and passing them off as his own.
“If kids are sitting up all night smoking super skunk and they…
