3G iPhone with GPS on the way… next year
Just half an hour to go until Apple’s press conference to launch the UK iPhone kicks off, but it seems 3G won’t be on the menu. TheStreet is reporting that a 3G iPhone is being developed, but won’t go on sale until the first quarter of 2008.
However, the silver lining is that the handset is set to include GPS for beefed-up mapping and navigation services. To be specific, Broadcom’s Global Locate is apparently supplying assisted GPS chips for the second-generation iPhone, which should make it quicker to get a signal than pure GPS.

ViaMichelin updates sat-nav software to version 7, new features available across whole Navigation range
ViaMichelin has announced an upgrade to its software, bringing it to version 7, and offering more intuitive, user-friendly features, including an improved navigation menu, exclusive Michelin Guide content, key information indicators such as battery level, speed, and estimated travel times.
The New Edition range features revised graphics, easy access buttons to locate the nearest petrol stations and car parks, and an improved Point of Interest (POI) system.
Version 7 also includes additional safety-related functions, including:
* “Dangerous Bend Alert”, which takes into account vehicle speed and tightness of bend to alert the driver to approaching bends,
* “School Alert”, which is activated during school hours,
* “Roadworks Alert”, alerting motorists to damaged or unmade roads,
* “Authorised overtaking area alerts”, showing legal places to overtake,
” “Tiredness Alert” which alerts the driver every two hours (that’d get annoying),
” “Tunnel Mode” which adjusts screen brightness and simulates the route when GPS reception is lost.

Takara to bring GP43 satnav device to Europe
It’s a fact that the Big Three of the satnav world (Garmin, TomTom, Navman) sell the majority of GPS navigation devices, but there are loads of firms scrapping it out behind them. One is Takara, which has announced plans to sell its new GP43 device in Europe.
It’s got a 4.3-inch widescreen display, and ships with European maps from Navteq on a 1GB SD card. It’s also got speed camera and radar locations preloaded, with free updates. Oh, and there’s Bluetooth, and the ability to play MPEG4 videos, MP3 music and display JPG photos.
Sony pitching PSP's non-gaming features with GPS satnav and Sky TV downloads
We’ll have to start filing PSP stories under ‘personal media players’ rather than ‘gaming’ soon, such is Sony’s determination to expand its handheld’s non-gaming capabilities.
We wrote yesterday about its Go!Messenger VoIP project with BT, but Sony has also just unveiled plans for a satnav add-on, as well as on-demand TV downloads from Sky.

Satnav business booming, but faces mobile challenge
Drivers are abandoning A-Z maps in their droves in favour of satnav systems, according to new sales figures from industry analyst Canalys. They claim that in the second quarter of 2007 alone, 7.4 million satnav devices were shipped – more than double the number in the same period last year.
