Intel to supply Nokia with mobile chips
Intel has reportedly struck a deal with Nokia to supply processors for the mobile phone giant. The arrangement would be a major coup for Intel who dominate the computer processor market but who have struggled to make an impact in the mobile phone market.
Intel’s Atom Processor, which is a low powered version of their x86 chip and is currently popular in the netbook market, is rumoured to be the chip that will be used. It will have to be lower powered than it currently is but if it proves successful it will come as a relief to the organisation who, in 2006, scrapped a $5billion investment into mobile chips as they thought they had missed the boat.
Most Nokia releases currently come with chips made by Texas, Qualcomm or Freescale. The single CPU, 434 MHz, ARM11 chip that powers Nokia’s latest flagship smartphone – the N97 – has faced early criticism for being sluggish.
This partnership could prove monumental in terms of the future of mobile phone development. Nokia are the world’s biggest manufacturer of mobile phones and Intel are the clear leaders in terms of CPU production. You do the math…s.

BBC iPlayer goes HD and Adobe Flash secures TV deal
Here’s a no-brainer for you with them both stuck next to each other on the BBC News page. On the one hand, iPlayer is going HD today. On the other, we’re going to see Adobe Flash chips in TV sets and set-top boxes.
Now seeing as iPlayer, and YouTube for that matter, are both Flash based, it looks as if live broadcast TV is taking another step towards an ultimate demise. The issue before, as far as I’m concerned was that the likes of iPlayer and the Tube were too hideously pixelated and rubbish to ever watch on the big screen but in full resolution, there’ll be nothing left to stop them.
So far, they’ll be no Adobe love for the likes of Sony and Samsung but we should be looking at 420 million bits and pieces of hardware as made by Broadcom, Intel, NXP and STMicroelectronics within the next three years. Worth having a little think before you buy AV.
Stone Neo 101 netbook skims into view
Adding to the plethora of netbooks on the market comes the Stone Neo 101, a compact machine sporting an Intel Atom processor.
It features a 10.1-inch widescreen display capable of 1,024 x 600 resolution and a keyboard that’s 90% the size of a standard one, meaning typing should still remain fairly accurate. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi card and optional internal 3G module, and there are two USB ports and a 34mm PCI-Express Card expansion slot…
Atom hits 2GHz with the Intel Z550
Intel has broken the 2GHz barrier with their Atom Z550 CPU announced earlier today. The chip-type, made famous by the netbook and other UMPCs, will support Intel’s Hyperthreading technology and run up to 2GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM.
The new hardware was shown off today in a conference in Beijing. It coincides with the first birthday of the Atom and this latest incarnation continues in the same mould by supplying the processing power at just 3W. Obviously a busy day for Intel.

Intel announces 'Jasper Forest' chip
Intel has just announced a new chip based on its Nehalem-EP architecture called “Jasper Forest”. It’s aimed at storage products and embedded applications and the I/O hub has been integrated right onto the chip.
Jasper Forest is named after a petrified forest in Arizona, pictured above. Intel often names its chips after geographical locations, with Nehalem named after an Oregon-based tribe of American indians.

Intel launches Digital Artist of the Year competition
In an art gallery on Pall Mall in London last night, Intel launched its search to find a Digital Artist of the Year. Digital Artist 2009 will be searching for the UK’s most talented artists in thirteen categories.
One of those thirteen is a ‘Rising Star’ award, which will be given to five entrants under the age of 25, and other categories include Architectural Visualisation, Motion Broadcast, Digital Painter and Ethical Design.
To celebrate, an exhibition of the digital art world will be on display at the Galleria from the 2nd to the 8th April. Medion announces compact AKOYA Nettop PC
For anyone wanting a PC with decent specs that’s quiet and small, the Medion AKOYA Nettop PC is worth taking a look at. It won’t break the speed record but is perfectly adequate for general home and Internet usage.
It features the Intel Atom 230 CPU running at 1.6GHz coupled with the Intel 945GC Express chipset and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.
It has 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive – both quantities could leave you wanting more in the long run but hopefully this is upgradable…
AMD launches 760G integrated graphics chipset
AMD, fighting a constant battle with Intel over the PC chip market, has announced that it’s releasing a new graphics chipset aimed at low-end PCs, called the 760G. It’ll be replacing the aging 740G chipset. The company is promising an energy efficient design and ‘smooth multitasking’, as well as a “compelling out-of-box visual experience for novice gamers playing some of today’s most popular games”.
It’s the word ‘novice’ that makes me laugh, because it seems to imply that anyone who’s played PC games before will fail to find a “compelling visual experience” using this chip. The 760G supports DirectX 10, and you’ll be able to upgrade easily to a full-on ATI graphics card with the Hybrid CrossFireX technology.
The 760G will begin showing up in motherboards from Asus, ECS, Gigabyte, Asrock, MSI, Foxconn and Biostar as of today, starting with the Asus M3A76-CM, and the Gigabyte GA-MA76GM-US2.
