Will Apple limit iPhone 3G in UK as punishment for unlocking, and why should they care?

iphone3G.jpg

According to inside sources in the mobile retail industry, Apple is planning to limit sales of the iPhone 3G in the UK because it’s pissed off (that’s the technical term, you understand) with Brits unlocking and doing naughty things with it.

Statistics suggest that only 15% (that’s around one in six) of the first generation iPhones sold in the UK were activated for use on the O2 network. The rest were either unlocked for use on other British networks or were sold on abroad…

O2 expects high demand for iPhone 3G: one per customer only

3g_iphone.jpg

O2 has just announced that, due to expected high demand for the iPhone 3G, orders will be limited to just one per customer on a strictly first-come-first-serve basis. It’s not clear whether the Carphone Warehouse will also impose this restriction, but it’s likely.

Unlike our American friends, who have now been told by AT&T that the handset will go on sale from 8am local time at AT&T stores, all we have to go on is the 11th July date. Rumours of O2 stores opening at 7am may be true, though we never saw preregistration begin yesterday…

Steve Jobs didn't mention MMS for the iPhone 3G, but will it actually support picture messages?

iphone-3g-mms.jpg

One of the most disappointing aspects about the iPhone 3G announcement was the lack of announcement surrounding MMS, or picture-messaging for acronym haterz. How could Jobs forget such an important feature? When crummy old Motorolas can send photos, it’s surprising the iPhone cannot.

Or can it? New details have emerged via an internal email at American carrier AT&T regarding a service that sounds distinctly like MMS. Users will be able to attach several images, plus an audio file and video to a normal SMS. Kind of like…oh wait, is it…an MMS?…

O2 leaks iPhone 3G PAYG pricing, £300 for 8GB iPhone

3g_iphone.jpg

This morning, O2 (seemingly) inadvertently published pricing for the Pay-As-You-Go iPhone 3G, then quickly retracted it.

Eagle-eyed sites gleaned that the 8GB iPhone 3G will cost £299.99, while the 16GB model will cost £359.99. Included with that is six months of Wi-Fi and unlimited Internet access, after which users would need to top up a minimum of £10 per month to keep the Internet access active…

Lost foreign survival guide for iPhone 3G discovered, translated by CNET UK

cnet-iphone-guide.jpg

CNET’S Andrew Lim has discovered a rare Japanese survival guide for the iPhone 3G, which promises ‘six hot tips for making very best good use of your new 3G iPhone!!!’, which he has translated for our benefit.

My favourite – which you can see in closer detail if you click on the picture above – describes what you should do if a ‘hyperactive child rubbed mud on your beautiful 3G iPhone’s screen’. The guide recommends you should quickly pull ‘the hair wiping move’, and ‘teach child life lesson and do double great wipe same time’. But not for too long, or ‘infant may start big big crying’. Sensible advice….
