Rock adds Intel's Q9000 quad-core chip to its Xtreme 780 gaming laptop
There are very few true PC gamers that’ll willingly buy a laptop over a desktop, primarily because the performance-price difference is so great. Rock’s just added an Intel Q9000 chip to its flagship gaming laptop – the Xtreme 780, but I suspect the majority of gamers out there simply won’t care.
It’s not even that great a machine. Quad-core aside, the 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS is merely adequate, the 2GB of memory will look very meagre before the end of 2009, and a 250GB hard drive is considerably less than most gamers will need. For £1700, which is what the Xtreme 780 costs, you could make two desktop PCs that outspec this laptop.
HP launching two Pavilion laptops, and one Firebird desktop
HP has announced a couple of new notebook PCs in its Pavilion range, and a successor to its high-end Blackbird desktop – the Firebird. Let’s take a look at the notebooks first.
They’re named Pavilion dv2 and Pavilion dv3. The dv2 is a slim-and-light machine, with 3.8 pound weight, and thickness of just one inch. The full specs aren’t available, but it’ll include an AMD Athlon processor, 12″ display, “nearly” full-size keyboard, discrete graphics and up to 500GB of hard disc space. There’s an optional external Blu-ray drive, too.
Lenovo launches new slim, pretty Y-series of laptops
This machine is one of three Y-series laptops announced this morning by Lenovo, and it’s certainly a looker. The Y650, Y550, and Y450 machines (it’s not clear which one is pictured above) only differ in screen size, ranging from 16″ to 14″, via 15″, all at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Inside, they’re rather attractive, too – boasting upto 4GB of RAM, upto 500GB hard disk space, and an optional NVidia GFX graphics card. The trackpad’s multi-touch, too, which might make it a good candidate to turn into a hackintosh. Can’t wait to get one into my hands, and see if it’s as lovely in person as in that picture above.

HP shows off "Firefly" concept gaming laptop
Pity it’s just a concept, but at least one laptop that HP will be showing off at CES next week looks *amazing*. Laptop Magazine has managed to get a hands-on of the HP Firefly – an innovative gaming laptop. Click over the jump for the full details of this beast.
Sony launches "revolutionary new VAIO" teaser site
Sony are joining Dell in launching a teaser site for some sort of new product (likely to be announced at CES in January). Sony is promising a ‘revolutionary new VAIO’ on January 9th, which tells us two things – firstly, it’ll not be that revolutionary, and secondly, it’ll be very expensive. Still, my rampant cynicism aside, we’ll have the all details from our CES correspondents come 9th Jan. Stay tuned.

Shiny Video Review: Advent 4213 Netbook
Zara got her hands on the Advent 4213 netbook the other day, and she liked it a lot. For me though, it seems to be trying to be a full-size laptop, rather than a diminutive netbook. It’s got a 10.2″ screen, a massive hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and it runs Windows XP – three things which I avoided when buying my Aspire One netbook a couple of months ago.
Still, if you’re not the sort of person who wants the full-on Linux-and-SSD netbook experience, then perhaps it’s for you. Check out the video above to see.

Asus launches quad-core gaming laptop – claims 'fastest in the UK'
Asus has just announced the UK’s first quad-core gaming laptop, claiming it’s the fastest gaming laptop that money can buy. It’s got an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor running at 2.53GHz, 4GB of RAM, a Geforce 9700M graphics card, and a pair of 250GB hard drives in RAID-0.
The beast packs a 17″ screen, with 1920×1200 resolution, and a smaller ‘VFD’ display too, which can show email notifications and framerates while in-game. It’s got a 2 megapixel webcam, 802.11n wireless, HDMI and eSATA ports, 2.1 speakers and a subwoofer, and ‘programmable chassis lighting’…
Laptop site "for women" launches with festive Gordon Ramsay live streaming recipes
Here’s my second food-related post of the day, with mews that Intel’s new My-Laptop.co.uk web site will be officially launched by outspoken Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay.
Intel will live stream various recipes, tips and techniques from Ramsay during the Taste of Christmas event from 4th-7th December. As well as a daily live webcast of Gordon’s theatre event, there will be live chats with the likes of Angela Hartnett, Jason Atherton and Stuart Gilles (protégés, apparently)…
SHINY VIDEO REVIEW: Asus Bamboo U6V
I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to try out Asus’s new recycled, recyclable laptop over the last few days. I was expecting considerably less of it than it delivered, but in reality it’s a solid workhorse laptop, with decent specs and good build quality. If you’ve got the cash, then I recommend it, though it is a little on the expensive side.
