RUMOUR: Android based Dell smartphone?
This post is going to consist of little more than this blurred picture I’m afraid. It’s supposedly the much anticipated Dell smartphone.
Little is known at this point apart from that it will probably be running Google Android version 1.5. The leaked photograph, courtesy of a Chinese PDA fan forum, indicates that it’s going to have a slide out keyborad – it looks very Palm Preish to me.
Apart from that, not much else is known, so we’ll just have to sit tight and see what happens. As always, keep your eye’s peeled on Tech Digest – we’ll be passing on any updates just as soon as we get them.
Pirate version of Sims 3 leaks onto the internet
Oh dear. Poor old piracy ravaged EA games has been hit yet again as copies of the Sims 3 have been leaked onto the web a full two weeks ahead of launch. A torrent file has popped up on all the usual sites with downloads and installations running just fine according to all reports.
The game requires no online registration to work, unlike Spore the best part of a year ago, and at it looks as if the games company is receiving some kind of perverse punishment for doing the decent thing in removing the hugely unpopular DRM that caused such an uproar the last time.
With only a serial code on the box to get around, key gens are all that’s needed to get the game installed and so long as users do not allow the game to access the internet, there should be no problem. The only issue comes if you want to play the game in an online mode. Then it might be worth forking out once the release is officially available.

Acer Exec confirms Windows 7 release date: 23rd October
“23rd October is the date the Windows 7 will be available” says Bobby Watkins, Acer’s UK MD. The company will be releasing its all-in-one Z5600 PC on that date, and it will come pre-loaded with Windows 7.
Microsoft is still claiming a release date of January 2010, but the company has acknowledged that it’s running ahead of schedule on the follow-up to its poorly-received Vista. Any Vista-based PCs purchased within 30 days prior to 23rd October will be eligible for a free upgrade.

Last.fm accused of handing U2 album leak user data to the RIAA
If you’ve been listening to a leaked copy of U2’s “No Line on the Horizon”, then it’s possible that the RIAA know exactly who you are, if you believe Techcrunch who got all in a tizzy on Friday over the suggestion that Last.fm has been handing over listener data to the record company.
Last.fm immediately denied the accusations, saying:
I’d like to issue a full and categorical denial of this. We’ve never had any request for such data by anyone, and if we did we wouldn’t consent to it.
Of course we work with the major labels and provide them with broad statistics, as we would with any other label, but we’d never personally identify our users to a third party – that goes against everything we stand for.
The RIAA followed that up, with:
“[We’re] not sure where that rumor came from. It’s not true.”
So you’re probably safe for now, but given how much personal data many people share on Last.fm, if you’re one of the first with a copy of a leaked album, then you might want to be careful about scrobbling that fact. Just a thought.
SPY SHOT: New iPhone back cover black and matte?
If these leaked spy shots, supposedly from China, are to be believed, then the back cover of the next version of the iPhone 3G will be black and matte. If you’re the kind of person with greasy fingers, then that’ll make you very happy.
The same source leaked an accurate back cover of last year’s iPhone months before its release, so there’s every reason to believe that this is real. On the other hand, though, it’s rather early to be seeing an Apple product that’s widely expected to show up in June.
Samsung Acme i8910 info spills out
Strange names for products can sometimes work – just look at the Wii. Even so, the Samsung Acme, which info has just leaked about, is a little too close to ‘acne’ for my liking. It’s heavily based on the Omnia, and actually looks to be a pretty decent upgrade to Samsung’s cameraphone.
It boasts an 8-megapixel sensor, GPS, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and a 3.5mm headphone socket. It’ll do HD recording, and it’s DNLA and DivX compatible. There’ll be 8GB and 16GB versions available, and because it’s got a massive touchscreen, it’ll invariably be referred to as an “iPhone Killer” at some point in its life. Sigh. No word on release date or pricing. Yet.

RUMOUR: Sky launching its music subscription service in April
Many have tried to make the all-you-can-eat subscription model work for music, but it’s never taken off due to incompatibilities between different portable music players and the lack of any big companies really getting behind it. Well, we’re hearing a rumour that Sky will finally launch its previously-announced subscription service in April.
Last we heard, we were promised a mix of both streaming and downloadable tracks. Over Christmas, pricing was allegedly leaked – unlimited free streams, plus a set number of MP3 downloads each month. £5.99 for 5 downloads, £7.99 for 10 and £9.99 for 15.
I’ve asked Sky for more details, and I’m waiting to hear back. I, for one, am convinced that it’s not only possible for a subscription service to work, but it’s actually the future of mass-market music consumption. There’s too many people who don’t care about anything beyond the top 40 for that not to be the case.
