World of Warcraft hits 11 million active subscribers worldwide
Belgium? Bolivia? Israel? Ireland? You’ve got nothing on World of Warcraft. Blizzard’s ultra-popular massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, full of orcs, elves, dwarves and undead, has hit 11 million active subscribers. That’s a shade fewer than the population of Greece, and means that one person in every 625 on the planet holds an active subscription…
Star Wars MMO: The Old Republic announced
In July, CEO of EA John Riccitiello revealed the existence of a second Star Wars massively-multiplayer-online-game, or MMOG, as they’re known. The first, Star Wars Galaxies, was initially popular when released in 2003, but after sweeping changes were made to the gameplay in late 2005, players left in their droves. This new attempt at hooking the vast intellectual property that is Star Wars into a MMO framework looks like it could be successful…
Professor given $100,000 to study World of Warcraft; Survey says MMO players aren't fat
Pictured left is one of the luckiest ladies alive. The National Science Foundation in the USA has decided to grant her, Prof. Bonnie Nardi, $100,000 of American taxpayer’s money to study World of Warcraft. Or, to be specific, why Americans make more modifications to the game than Chinese players do. Gosh, that’s a lot of money.
City of Heroes developer steps in to take Star Trek to the MMO frontier
“Star Trek has been a part of my entire life,” writes Jack Emmert of Cryptic Studios. We suspect this is probably the single best way to begin a new announcement about a Star Trek game, assuming that “I am Patrick Stewart’s secret love child” comes with some sort of libel risk.
Blizzard wins round one of World of Warcraft bot battle
A judge has ruled in favour of World of Warcraft developer, Blizzard, which is currently engaged in a legal battle against the creator of a WoW bot program called MMO Glider. The Arizona district court ruling on the case has supported Blizzard’s claim that the program infringes on its copyright, giving a first stage victory to the MMO maker.
New contender to the MMO throne: Age of Conan gears up for a massive launch
Veteran MMO developers Funcom are about to launch their most ambitious online world to date, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. It’s already off to a good start -800,000 fans have actually ticked the ‘Yes, I would like to be bombarded with junk mail’ box (so did I, actually) and have signed up to the newsletter, and over 1 million players have reportedly signed up to the open beta phase…
The Sims Online closes – as new MMORPG Stargate Worlds opens its beta
There probably isn’t that much of a crossover between The Sims Online (recently renamed the beyond abysmal “EA-Land”) players and those keen on signing up to a beta test of new MMORPG Stargate Worlds, but you never know.
EA announced the closure of EA-Land this week, to the sadness of the few young girls and odd men who are still hanging in there. The doors on the once-promising Sims Online universe will close forever on August 1, 2008.
But, as in nature, one death is always replaced by a new, glorious birth! Publisher FireSky has announced that preliminary registration for its beta…
GNGWC is the Olympics of massively multiplayer online games! Kind of!
Sorry, this isn’t about thousands of World of Warcraft players emerging from darkened internet cafes to try their hands at javelin and the steeplechase. Although I’d pay to watch that. Instead, it’s a competition called Game&Game World Championship (GNGWC for short) which aims to find the most ninja MMOer in the world.
