STATTACK: You're twice as likely to get your phone nicked in London than in New York
If there was ever a reason to go to GameCityThree, rather than the London Games Festival, then this is it. Carphone Warehouse reckons that 25% of adults in London have had their phone nicked, compared to 15% in the rest of the country. 14% of British teenagers have had their phone stolen, compared to 9% of teens in the USA, and 7% of adults. In London in 2007, there were three robberies per 1000 people, whereas in New York, there were only 1.61…
Asus to launch Android-powered smartphone
What’s the betting Asus are going to call this the EeePhone? Fairly high, I’d imagine, given their tendency to slap the Eee label on everything they produce. The Taiwanese company recently brought out a Windows Mobile-powered smartphone, but this one will run Google’s new mobile OS – Android.
Initially the phones will likely be only for sale in Taiwan, but Asus have mentioned the prospect of bringing them abroad. No more details as yet, but when some more surface, we’ll be sure to share them. It’s good to see more manufacturers making use of the Android platform.

Change your mobile phone's font with FlipFont
Okay – hands up, font geeks. This one’s for you. If you’ve had enough of watching Helvetica, and you’ve already told everyone you know about the Ban Comic Sans campaign, then you need something else to do with your time, right? How about fiddling with your phone’s font…?
Qik mobile video-streaming application comes to BlackBerry
Qik, the popular mobile video-streaming service, has just launched a client for BlackBerry devices. Qik allows users to stream video from their mobile device to websites and blogs over a 3G, Wi-Fi or GPRS connection. As of sometime this morning, it now works on RIM devices running BlackBerry OS 4.5 and above, including the Pearl 8120, Pearl 8130, and the recently released BlackBerry Bold. Qik clients for the BlackBerry Curve and Flip 8220 should be available soon…
Terrorists on Twitter? The US Army seem to think so…
A draft Army intelligence report reckons that terrorists might be able to use popular microblogging service Twitter to co-ordinate attacks against the United States. It follows fears that World of Warcraft might be used for the same purposes both stories beg the question: haven’t the US army got anything better to do…?
Mobile GMail version 2.0 released – a billion times better than before
Like many people, I use GMail almost exclusively for my email. I run Mobile GMail on my N95, but the application is one of the least functional that I’ve ever seen. Luckily, Mobile GMail 2.0 is here to save the day. It adds better performance, offline support, multiple account support and lets you save more than one draft email at a time…
SFW: Teen mobile nudewave strikes America
Earlier this month, a 15-year-old girl was arrested in Ohio for sending nude pictures of herself to friends via her mobile phone. After a local prosecutor visited the school to talk about the dangers of sending nude photos of minors around, the girl stuck two fingers up to authority and snapped some photos of herself, then sent them to friends…
GALLERY: Alternative Android User Interfaces
The UI on T-Mobile’s G1 was designed by a Swedish company called The Astonishing Tribe, which is a great name. Better than “Symantec” or “McAfee”, or “Microsoft”, anyway. They’ve just released a bunch of UI also-rans, so you can see what could have been. They range from the functional, to the wacky, to the cute, to the very attractive. Click the very “functional” one below to start the gallery.

Motorola Aura – luxury phone with the first circular display
Blimey. Sometimes stuff leaks very very early, other times you don’t see it till it’s nearly out. This certainly falls into the latter category. It’s a more-than-a-little-ridiculous new phone from Motorola. “Luxury” doesn’t come close – this phone has more than 700 individual components, a 62-carat sapphire crystal lens, and the world’s first 16 million colour, circular display with 300 dpi resolution.
I’m feeling a little breathless right now, so here’s what Motorola has to say about the device:
Combining superb craftsmanship and a distinctive interface, AURA delivers a sensory experience that is second to none for those with refined tastes. From the moment AURA owners pick up their devices, they elevate their own experience in luxury and unmatched quality.
