Winamp 5.5 allows music to be streamed to your Nintendo Wii

winamp-wii.jpg As part of Winamp’s resurgence, they’re not just content with ripping off iTunes iPod compatability, oh no, they’re thinking even more outside of the box. Infact, they’re not even thinking about that box on your computer desk which houses all that software, bits, bytes and chips, they’re thinking about an entirely new box. Specifically, your Wii. Don’t get too scared now…

MyStrands.tv: a personalised MTV for Web 2.0 heads

mystrands-tv.jpg

It’s a bit of a cliche to say that MTV doesn’t play music videos any more: that might be true on its main channel, but then it’s got plenty of music-focused spin-offs (MTV2, MTV Base etc) for that.

Nevertheless, a number of Web 2.0 startups are working the ‘we get back to the days when MTV wasn’t full of annoying Jackass blokes and prom queens’ angle, serving up just music – except personalised to your tastes. The latest is MyStrands.tv, an offshoot of music recommendation service MyStrands.

iPod obsolete, Walkman device will rule, says boss of Sony-owned record label

ipod.jpgRick Rubin, co-chairman of Columbia Records, has publicly stated that the iPod and iTunes models are doomed, with the way to go being subscription-based, music-anywhere, services.

In fact, he thinks the whole music business will only be saved by going to a subscription model, but he’s quick to pick on the iPod. “The iPod will be obsolete, but there would be a Walkman-like device you could plug into speakers at home,” he said.

Rubin’s motivation is that adopting cheap music subscription services will curb illegal downloads, believing that “If music is easily available at a price of five or six dollars a month, then nobody will steal it.”

I’m not convinced.

Carlsberg-backed Tuborg beer opens music social-networking site

tuborgbeer.jpg Stop salivating over that little .jpeg of the Tuborg beer on the left there, it’s not even 11am. You have to wait another hour before you can start fantasising over beer. After all, it’s only Tuesday.

Apparently the Carlsberg-owned beer brand Turborg has just launched a music-based networking portal which may just give MySpace a run for its money. Targeting 18-25 year olds, the site gives users information about bands touring around the UK, and even reviews written by some of the best music journalists in the industry….

As you’ll know if you ready our Nokia Go Play liveblog yesterday, alongside its launch of the Nokia Music Store, the company unveiled its new N81 8GB music phone.

Manx Telecom offers Mobile Downloads service on superfast 3.5G network

manx_telecom_logo.gifWe often credit (and drool at) Japan with having the most advanced technology, and bemoaning the lack of such gadgetry in the UK, but you don’t have to look so far away to find cutting edge technology and services.

Manx Telecom, which serves the Isle of Man, has just launched a converged content delivery service called Mobile Downloads, which will enable its 75,000-strong subscriber base to purchase, download, and consume music from both mobile devices and PCs, thanks to the new iO Mobile Experience Platform.

Manx claims to be the first operator in the world to deliver such a service from iO global, having also credited as the first in the world to launch a 3.5G mobile service.
