Run Ubuntu Linux in Windows with Portable Ubuntu
I know, I know – you keep meaning to install Linux and shake off the influence of “The Man” on everything you do, but every time you try it you get confused by partitions and command line worries. Well relax, we’ve got your back with the news of an app called Portable Ubuntu.
It sits on a thumb drive and provides a GNOME-based version of Ubuntu that’ll happily sit alongside all your Windows apps. In fact, you can totally ignore it if you want to, safe in the knowledge that if anyone ever sends you a tar.gz you’ll be sorted. Who knows, maybe you just prefer Ubuntu apps, but occasionally need to run the odd Windows program that doesn’t play nice with WINE.
In fact, I’ll buy a pint for anyone who uses this to run Windows apps with WINE and provides video evidence. My head’s hurting just thinking about it – send it to us at @techdigest.
HP considering Android for forthcoming netbooks
Top laptop manufacturer Hewlett-Packard, or HP, has confirmed that it’s testing out Android as a operating system for forthcoming netbooks. Normally the platform is only used in phones, and at the time of writing there’s only one phone on the market that uses it.
Android can work on netbooks, as Venturebeat proved back in January. They had a little difficulty with graphics drivers, but if a user wasn’t rendering much more than websites then it could be very effective and very cheap – a great solution for the netbook industry.
HP has said that it hasn’t made any decisions yet on whether to offer it or not, but it’ll be interesting to see how they fare with it. Other netbook manufacturers will almost certainly be watching, too.

iPhone prototypes now available on eBay
Want to get your hands on a piece of tech history? Of course you do. Someone’s managed to get hold of a couple of iPhone prototypes and has chucked it on eBay, because that’s what people who get rare bits of tech do.
Phone #1 powers on, and displays an odd interface. There’s a plastic matte screen. It can make calls, and surf the net. It won’t send texts, though. The second model won’t turn on at all, but has a glass screen.
The bidding, at the time of writing, has reached $940, but the seller will ship worldwide, so don’t be put off by those dollar signs. There’s a day to go, so the bidding will almost certainly escalate quite a bit as the auction nears its end. How much do you really want a couple of barely-working iPhones?

Samsung promises "more than three" Android phones this year
Over here, we’re well in favour of handset makers experimenting with different operating systems. That’s why I was filled with glee this morning after reading that Samsung’s planning not one but “more than three” Android phones this year, as well as one running LiMo – a mobile OS based on Linux.
We’ve been praying for more Android phones ever since the G1 turned out to be not *quite* the iPhone-beater that everyone was hoping for. Hopefully Samsung will take note of Dan’s shopping list for the perfect smartphone, and build one accordingly.

Microsoft extends availability of Windows 7 beta
Did you have trouble picking up the Windows 7 beta over the weekend? I sure did. I didn’t manage to get my hands on it till last night, when I finally got it burnt to DVD and installed on a spare laptop.
In light of the massive demand, Microsoft has wisely decided to drop the 2.5 million downloads limit, and is instead letting you download it as many times as you want within the next two weeks – until the 24th January. Every time you download, you’ll be given a CD key.
As a result of not getting my hands on the OS till last night, I’m still formulating my first thoughts. So far, though, I like what I’ve seen very much. It’s very responsive, and usable. It seems to fix almost everything people didn’t like about Vista and improve a bunch of other features, too. Full thoughts later in the week.

Merry Christmas extremely bored men – Windows 7 beta hits the torrent sites
If you haven’t already had ENOUGH of BLOODY WINDOWS after having Vista forced down your throat and onto your hard drive, you may now start worrying about driver incompatibilities anew – Windows 7 has been leaked.
The Beta 1 build of the next MS OS, which has been reviewed very favourably by a man here and is scheduled for a much wider beta test early next year – has popped up on Bittorrent for downloading. A good 20,000 or so users are currently nicking Windows 7 off Mininova, with a similar number taking it just because it’s there and is a nice thing to have from The Bay.
