UK retailer says Playstation 3 and PSP price cuts imminent
It’s no secret that the Playstation 3 is struggling a bit. It’s hard to be firmly in last place in the console wars, yet still be the most expensive by quite a long way. It’s rumoured that publishers are warning them that if they don’t up their market share soon, then they’re going to lose developer support in favour of the Wii. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that CVG reports this morning that a “major UK retailer” has let them know that Sony have price cuts coming soon to both their PS3 and PSP consoles.
Sony UK sort of cuts price of PlayStation3 – starts offering £40 discount on 40GB model
If you really, really must have a PlayStation3 right now, you might want to buy yourself one via Sony’s online shop SonyStyle.co.uk – as it’s currently offering a £40 discount on its cheapest model.
The deal takes the RRP of the Blu-ray-playing “entry level” 40GB machine down to an almost reasonable £249 including free delivery, with a nearly tempting…
DO NOT BUY A PLAYSTATION3 JUST YET – Sony's planning a price cut in March 2009
Here’s an amusing little faux pas to add to the 2.4MB, 124-page-long document I carry around with me at all times on a memory stick documenting all of Sony’s errors regarding PS3.
At a recent employee meet, the company apparently told its staff that PS3 would start to be “more competitive in price” from March of 2009, telling everyone the expensive Blu-ray console will be a little more affordable next Easter – and damaging sales from now until then, we’d imagine, as credit-crunched gamers beneath the fuel poverty line hold out for a price cut.
The report also revealed that Uncharted 2 would be shown to the world and that LittleBigPlanet would be announced for PSP, both in March ’09…
Something to do with a PlayStation3 – spend 25 minutes waiting for Windows Vista to load
You have to love hackers. OK, so they occasionally hack into your email account and upload your cybersex email history to the internet for everyone to laugh at, print out and stick on the office noticeboard, but, once in a while, they pull off something truly magnificent.
Like this – getting Windows Vista running on a PlayStation3. It’s actually running under emulation, with Qemu 0.9.1 doing most of the work. Which is why it takes 25 minutes to boot up.
There’s quite a bit more to it than that, but it’s frankly way above my head and if I tried to explain how it’s been done I’d only get something wrong…
Logitech unveils new wireless force feedback Racing Wheel for PS3
Console manufacturers and games publishers aren’t the only ones living it up at E3. Accessory-makers are out in force too, including Logitech. It has a load of new goodies for console owners including this Driving Force Wireless Racing Wheel for PS3.
Rumour: PS3 firmware 2.4 out this month

Metal Gear Online beta test coming to Europe – next week. And free
Sony releases its revamped PlayStation Store next week, and there’ll be one quite HUGE surprise waiting to be downloaded – a free beta test version of Metal Gear Online.
Not to be confused with the imminent Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Online is an entirely new and separate game for PS3. It’s online. As you might have guessed. It’s entirely multiplayer. It’s going to get PS3 owners excited…
Soon, iPhone and PS3 will be able to control one another
In a bizarre concoction, it turns out that the iPhone and the PlayStation 3 may soon be able to converse with and control one another, thanks to a new application from Netblender.
At its most basic level, the iPhone will be able to remote control Blu-ray disc playback on the PS3, but Denny Breitenfeld, Netblender’s CTO, says that it’s much more than that…

Rumours of £299 PS3 gather pace, despite Sony's denial
PS3 is still too expensive. Sony argues the point, of course, but the sales figures show that it’s suffering in comparison with the cheaper Xbox 360 and Wii. So it’s no surprise that when a rumour springs up about a PS3 price cut, it spreads like wildfire.
Such is the case this week, with well-sourced reports claiming that Sony’s about to unveil a cut-down PS3 for £299, with a smaller 40GB hard drive, no USB ports and no backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games.
